Mavericks Best St. Olaf and UW-Oshkosh, Finish 2-0 in Trianglar
MANKATO, MINN — The Minnesota State wrestling team (7-2, 3-0) went 2-0 in a triangle dual with St. Olaf and UW-Oshkosh on Saturday. They defeated St. Olaf by a final score of 50-4 and UW-Oshkosh by a final score of 41-12.
In their first dual of the day, the Mavericks took on St. Olaf. To go along with four forfeit victories, MSU won five of the other six matches in the dual. Trevor Schultz (Jr., 125 lbs.) won the first match of the day, pinning Guillermo Gorrin in a short 11 seconds. Daniel Close (Fr., 149 lbs.) won by major decision over Bryant Ridgeway to pick up his 19th win of the season.
Second-ranked Matt Mincey (R-Sr., 157 lbs.) picked up a quick pin over Jesse Leamon in 32 seconds to grab his 15th win of the year. Eighth-ranked Scott VanDeLoo (Sr., 184 lbs.) picked up a fall in 48 seconds over Hugh Ellerman to increase the Maverick lead. Malcolm Allen (Sr., 285 lbs.) defeated ninth-ranked in Division III Zach Gibson by major decision, 14-6, to top off the first Maverick victory of the day.
In their second and final dual of the day, Minnesota State started off down early, but was able to pull away in its later matches against the Titans of UW-Oshkosh. Down 12-6 heading into the 157-pound match, the team received a momentum boost from Matt Mincey, who won by technical fall over Joe Pelkey to narrow the Titan lead to just one point. Mincey, who was ranked number two in the nation heading into Saturday’s contests, now stands at an unblemished 16-0.
The next five Mavericks all won by fall in their remaining matches, to assist in taking the lead and picking up the win. Corey Abernathy (So., 165 lbs.) picked up his second pin of the season with a fall over Pat Riley in 49 seconds. Max Bullock (Jr., 174 lbs.) snagged an exciting fall over Julius Smith in 6:20. Bullock was down with a minute remaining but a quick reversal that put Smith on his back helped him pull off the victory.
VanDeLoo picked up his second fall in two matches after pinning Parker Knueppel in 1:23. Darick Vancura (Jr., 197 lbs.) kept his recent momentum going as he won by fall over John DePersia in 37 seconds. Malcolm Allen concluded the action for Minnesota State with a fall over Elijah Burdick in 2:08.
St. Olaf will host Dakota Wesleyan University on Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. in Northfield.
The Mavericks return to action on Thursday, January 28 where they will host the Vikings of Augustana. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
