MSU-Mankato Hosts SJU Wrestling Thursday Night

Saint John’s wrestling returns to the mat with a 7 p.m. dual at No. 14 (DII) MSU-Mankato on Thursday, Jan. 21, at the Taylor Center in Mankato.

Saint John's JohnniesA LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John’s (3-11 dual record) posted a 2-1 record at the Lakeland (Wis.) Duals the last time it hit the mat back on Jan. 9. The Johnnies started the day with a 30-9 loss to Wisconsin-Eau Claire, but bounced back with wins over the Milwaukee School of Engineering (40-7) and the University of Chicago (33-20). SJU was originally scheduled to wrestle Dubuque (Iowa) in its second dual of the day, but the opponent was switched to MSOE Saturday morning. SeniorMike Pleski (Stacy, Minn./Forest Lake) and junior Teddy Erickson (Annandale, Minn.) each went 3-0 at 133 and 165 pounds, respectively. Sophomore Nick Pegelow (Eagan, Minn./Eastview) collected a 2-0 record at 197 pounds.

PROJECTED LINEUP: The Johnnies are slated to send 12 wrestlers to Mankato on Thursday.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: Senior Ben Henle (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) fell out of the top 10 at 141 pounds according to D3wrestle.com, where he is listed as a “contender” in the virtual No. 11 spot. Henle was, however, ranked seventh in the latest National Wrestling Coaches’ Association (NWCA) rankings released Jan. 12. Juniors Colin Fisher (Eagan, Minn.) and Robert Tait (Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) were listed as a contender (heavyweight) and honorable mention (184 pounds), respectively, by D3wrestle.com.

A LOOK AT THE MAVERICKS: MSU-Mankato (4-2 dual record) moved up the NCAA Division II poll to No. 14 in the latest set of rankings released Jan. 14. The Mavericks currently have three wrestlers ranked individually in Division II. Senior Matt Mincey (13-0 record) moved up four spots to No. 2 at 157 pounds. He upset top-ranked and defending national champion Jonatan Rivera of Notre Dame (Ohio) with a 6-3 decision at the National Duals Jan. 8. He also defeated seventh-ranked Chase White of Nebraska-Kearney 7-3 later that day. Junior Adam Cooling is ranked seventh at 174 pounds and is 17-3 on the year, including a 7-1 record against Division II competition. Senior Scott VanDeLoo is 12-1 and ranked eighth at 184 pounds.

IT’S BEEN AWHILE: The last time Saint John’s and MSU-Mankato met for a wrestling dual was back on Nov. 15, 2006, in Mankato. The Mavericks, then ranked No. 3 in Division II, defeated the Johnnies by a 36-6 score.
