University of Minnesota Coaches Corner – January 21, 2016

In the latest installment of Coach’s Corner, University of Minnesota Head Assistant Coach Brandon Eggum offers his thoughts on each of the 10 matches from last Sunday’s 17-16 upset of No. 8 Rutgers.

Five Gophers earned victories on the day, but none bigger than in the opening match of the dual when No. 4 Brett Pfarr put together a 23-8 tech fall over Anthony Messner. In a dual that came down to bonus points, those earned by Pfarr proved to be the difference.

Minnesota GophersNo. 8 Tommy Thorn scored his first career top-five victory when he knocked off then-No. 4 Anthony Ashnault, 8-1, just before halftime. That win was the first of three straight and four over the next five matches for the Gophers. No. 9 Jake Short, Brandon Kingsley and Nick Wanzek all won their matches by decision during that stretch.
