In the latest installment of Coach’s Corner, University of Minnesota Head Assistant Coach Brandon Eggum offers his thoughts on each of the 10 matches from last Sunday’s 17-16 upset of No. 8 Rutgers.
Five Gophers earned victories on the day, but none bigger than in the opening match of the dual when No. 4 Brett Pfarr put together a 23-8 tech fall over Anthony Messner. In a dual that came down to bonus points, those earned by Pfarr proved to be the difference.
No. 8 Tommy Thorn scored his first career top-five victory when he knocked off then-No. 4 Anthony Ashnault, 8-1, just before halftime. That win was the first of three straight and four over the next five matches for the Gophers. No. 9 Jake Short, Brandon Kingsley and Nick Wanzek all won their matches by decision during that stretch.
