Wyoming Defeats NDSU 27-13 in Big 12 Conference Dual

FARGO, N.D.— The University of Wyoming won seven weight classes including a fall, tech fall and pair of major decisions to defeat North Dakota State University 27-13 in a Big 12 Conference dual Sunday, Jan. 31 before 403 spectators in the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.

NDSU (2-5, 2-1 Big 12) hits the road for a pair of duals, a Big 12 meeting against Utah Valley University (3-6, 0-0 Big 12) at 8 p.m. Central on Friday, Feb. 5, and non-conference match at Grand Canyon University (5-16) at 2 p.m. Central Sunday, Feb. 7.

With the dual starting at 165-pounds, Wyoming (4-6, 2-4 Big 12) and Kyle Pope wasted little time in posting an 18-1 tech fall at 2:13 over NDSU’s Grant Nehring. The Cowboys won four of the first five matches including Jace Jensen’s 2-0 decision over Blake Thompson at 174, Brandon Tribble’s 3-1 win over Logan Paxton at 197 and 19th-ranked Tanner Harms 8-6 overtime win over Ben Tynan at 285.

NDSU BisonNorth Dakota State’s lone win came at 184 where 5th-ranked Hayden Zillmer turned back Ben Stroh with a 14-6 major decision. Zillmer recorded his 99th career win and ranks 10th all-time at NDSU. He improved to 25-3 overall and 7-0 in duals to push his streak to 23 straight.

Following Harms’ win at 285, Wyoming led 14-4. However, NDSU and 16th-ranked Josh Rodriguez received a forfeit at 125 pounds to cut the deficit to 14-10. Nico Colunga then rallied for a 10-8 overtime win over Drake Foster to trim the Cowboys’ lead to 14-13. Colunga recorded his first collegiate dual win in five tries and improved to 13-14 overall.

Wyoming close out the dual with three straight wins as 15th-ranked 141 Bryce Meredith responded with an 11-3 major decision over Mitch Bengtson, 149 Cole Mendenhall pinned Clay Ream at 1:20, and 157 Archie Colgan claimed a 9-4 major decision over Kyle Gliva.
