SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — After an exciting day two of the NCAA Division II Super Region 3 Tournament, the Maverick wrestling team saw four of its wrestlers advance to the NCAA Championships in two weeks time.
#7 Matt Mincey (R-Sr., 157 lbs.) finished second overall on the day to advance. He won his semi-final match against Marcus Polak (Minot State) by a 3-1 decision, but was defeated by top-ranked Terrel Wilbourn (Lindenwood) by fall in 3:24.
#7 Adam Cooling (Jr., 174 lbs.) earned his first career trip to the NCAA Championships after finishing third in his regional bracket. He dropped his semi-final contest versus Clayton Jennissen (St. Cloud State) by a 3-2 decision, before picking up two wins over Tim Weber (Augustana) by a 6-3 decision and John Filipek (McKendree University) by a 10-2 major decision to move on.
Scott VanDeLoo (Sr., 184 lbs.) kept his season going by finishing fourth in his weight class. VanDeLoo picked up his first victory in the consolation bracket over Brody Goens (Southwest Minnesota State) in an 8-2 decision. His match of the day came in a sudden victory 4-2 decision over Dalton Westerlund (Upper Iowa). VanDeLoo dropped his third-place match, but with Westerlund winning the match to get into the fourth-place match, VanDeLoo would advance by rule to finish fourth, since he had already defeated Westerlund.
Malcolm Allen (R-Sr., 285 lbs.) secured his trip to the NCAA Championships after finishing second in his weight class. Allen defeated Travis Smith (U-Mary) by a 5-1 decision to advance to the finals. He would be defeated by Austin Goergen (St. Cloud State) in a 3-0 decision to finish second on the day.
Alphonso Vruno (Sr., 141 lbs.), Daniel Close (Fr., 149 lbs.), and Darick Vancura (Jr., 197 lbs.) saw their seasons come to an end, after all finishing sixth in their weight classes.
The Mavericks are off now until the NCAA Division II Championships on March 11 and 12 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
