Two Sign With Jackrabbit Wrestling

South Dakota State University wrestling coach Chris Bono announced that high school standouts Colten Carlson and Nolan Funk recently signed National Letters of Intent, indicating they will enroll at SDSU in the fall and compete for the Jackrabbit wrestling program.

A native of Willmar, Minnesota, Carlson set a Willmar High School record for career wins with a 225-42 varsity record. A three-time all-state honoree, he won 124 matches by pin and capped his career by winning the Class 3A state title at 160 pounds. Carlson recorded 227 takedowns during his senior season. He also received academic all-state recognition two times.

SDSU JackrabbitsFunk, from Broomfield, Colorado, was a state finalist at 195 pounds during his senior season at Legacy High School. A two-time all-conference honoree, Funk posted a 95-32 record at the prep level, previously competing at 170 pounds.

Carlson and Funk join a Jackrabbit recruiting class that includes three fall signees who finished off their high school careers with state titles this winter. Justin Portillo (113 pounds) and Josh Portillo (120 pounds) each won Class 2A individual state titles in Iowa, while Garrett Jordan was a Class 3A state champion in Ohio at 160 pounds.

The Jackrabbits completed the 2015-16 season with a 14-6 dual record and attained a team national ranking for the first time at the Division I level. Five SDSU wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Wrestling Championships after making their inaugural appearance in the Big 12 Conference Tournament.
