BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University wrestling coach Chris Bono announced Monday the signing of four-time Kansas state champion Michael Prieto to a National Letter of Intent, indicating he will enroll at SDSU in the fall and compete for the Jackrabbit wrestling team.
A native of Garden City, Kansas, Prieto compiled a 162-10 career record and helped lead Garden City High School to four consecutive Class 6A team titles under the direction of his coach and father, Carlos.
He won his first individual state title as a freshman in the 106-pound weight class, compiling a 42-2 record. He moved up to the 113-pound division as a sophomore and won his second consecutive state title, finishing with a 44-2 record.
Following his sophomore season, Prieto competed in the 113-pound weight class and turned in a third-place finish.
He continued his dominance on the mat as a junior, posting a 45-3 record in the 126-pound weight class en route to becoming his school’s first three-time state champion. Despite being hampered by injuries during his senior campaign, Prieto was able to win his fourth state title and recorded a 31-3 record while moving up to 138 pounds.
Prieto is the sixth high school wrestling standout to commit to the Jackrabbits. Other members of the incoming recruiting class include: fall signees Justin Portillo (Clarion, Iowa), Josh Portillo (Clarion, Iowa) and Garrett Jordan (St. Paris, Oho), along with spring signees Colten Carlson (Willmar, Minnesota) and Nolan Funk (Broomfield, Colorado).
