Mavericks Add Eight Student-Athletes

MANKATO, Minn. — Head coach Jim Makovsky has announced that eight student-athletes will join the Maverick wrestling team.

All signings and transfers are contingent upon admission to MSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Eligibility Center.

MSU-Mankato MavericksZach Johnston (Adel-Desoto-Minburn HS), Matt Blome (Mount Horeb HS), Tanner Day (Mounds View HS), Trenton McManus (Adams Friendship HS), Derek Herman (USC HS), Tony Heng (Lourdes Central HS), Logan Saltou (John Marshall HS) and Logan Foote (Minnetonka HS) will join the Minnesota State wrestling team in the fall.

A high school champion from Waukee, Iowa, Johnston (165 lbs.) put together a career record of 150-30, including one state high school championship, to go along with two second-place finishes in the Iowa state high school tournament. He also boasts a pair of fifth place finishes at the Cliff Keen Preseason National Tournament.

A native of Mount Horeb, Wis., Blome (184/197 lbs.) posted a career record of 160-27, including a first-place and a second-place finish at the Wisconsin high school tournament. Blome intends to major in English education at Minnesota State.

A Cliff Keen All-American out of Shoreview, Minn., Day (141 lbs.) qualified for the Minnesota high school tournament three times, including one fourth-place finish. Along with his 131 career wins, Day has also posted sixth-place and eighth-place finishes at the Cliff Keen Nationals and plans to major in law and political science at Minnesota State.

A proposed mechanical engineering major out of Adams, Wis., McManus (125 lbs.) qualified for the Wisconsin state tournament four times and posted two third place finishes, to go along with a fourth-place and a sixth-place finish. McManus, who recorded a 150-16 career record, has also excelled in the classroom as he garnered first-team All-Academic State honors. He is also a member of the National Honor Society.

A three-sport athlete out of Wells, Minn., Herman (174 lbs.) earned academic all-conference honors in wrestling, football, and baseball at USC High School. Boasting a 193-50 career record, Herman qualified for the Minnesota state tournament five times, including a second-place finish. He also earned a fourth-place finish at the Virginia Beach High School National Tournament. Herman, who intends to major in business, posted 193-50 career record.

A state qualifier from Nebraska City, Neb., Heng (125/133 lbs.) put together a career record of 120-28 at Lourdes Central High School, including a third-place and a fourth-place finish at the Nebraska high school state tournament. Heng intends to major in mechanical engineering at Minnesota State and is a member of the National Honor Society.

A proposed finance major from Rochester, Minn., Saltou (157 lbs.) qualified for the Minnesota High School state tournament three times, including a third-place and a fifth-place finish. Along with a career record of 195-47, Saltou earned four Academic All-State honors. His 195 high school victories are the most in ever in the city of Rochester.

A native of Minnetonka, Minn., Foote (184/197 lbs.) earned a sixth-place finish at the Minnesota High School Tournament. He has won more than 100 matches in his career, including 50 pinfall victories. Foote intends to major in business at Minnesota State.
