Moorhead’s Grove Family Has Strong ND Wrestling Ties

When North Dakota wrestling fans dissected Junior Duals results a few weeks ago, many of our state champions were easy to recognize; Nein, Franek, and Shearer are all names currently synonymous with success both in the state and nationally. There was another wrestler who had great success for Team North Dakota, 6-2 in freestyle and 5-1 in Greco-Roman, that North Dakota fans may be less aware of. This wrestler is currently ranked seventh in the nation by Flowrestling, but has no North Dakota high school state titles. He is Moorhead senior (Class of 17) Samuel Grove, and though he does not compete in North Dakota during the High School Season, his success and that of his older brother Joseph has been rooted in North Dakota wrestling going back 15 years.

Grove wrestles in Minnesota’s largest class, AAA, which is arguably one of the toughest high school divisions in the nation. In the course of Grove’s varsity career, he has amassed 145 victories and qualified for the Minnesota State tournament three times, placing fourth in 2015 and second in 2016. Grove will look to springboard his Team North Dakota summer success into a state championship during his final season with the Spuds, and many North Dakotans involved in his development will be following along.
