MACON, France — South Dakota State University wrestler Seth Gross will take to the mat in international competition Saturday, competing for the U.S. Men’s Freestyle Team at the UWW Junior World Championships.
Gross, who is one of eight members of the freestyle team made up of 17- to 20-year-olds, is expected to compete in the 60-kilogram (132-pound) division. Preliminary rounds begin at 10 a.m. local time in France (3 a.m. Central Time), with the finals at 11 a.m. Central that same day.
A native of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Gross earned the right to compete internationally after strong showings in a pair of UWW junior events this past spring. Wrestling under the banner of the Jackrabbit Wrestling Club, Gross finished as runner-up in the 60-kilogram division at the UWW Junior Freestyle Nationals in April, then avenged his earlier loss by winning the weight class at the UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials in May.
During his first season with the Jackrabbits, Gross compiled a 26-14 overall record while competing at 141 pounds. He was the runner-up at the Big 12 Conference Championship and was one of five SDSU wrestlers to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Gross spent last week training with the team in Colorado Springs, Colorado, before arriving in France earlier this week.
Jackrabbit coaches Chris Bono and Jon Reader will serve as members of the U.S. team’s coaching staff.
Gross’s former Apple Valley teammate Mark Hall also competes on Saturday.
Flowrestling is expected to live stream the competition on its website, flowrestling.org. Those interested in watching will need a FloPro account. Results can also be found at unitedworldwrestling.org.
