On Monday, the National Wrestling Coaches’ Association (NWCA) shared on its Twitter account that Gopher senior Brett Pfarr has been selected to wrestle in the 51st NWCA All-Star Classic this November. Pfarr, who placed third at 197 pounds in last spring’s NCAA Championships, will take on fellow All-American, Brett Harner (Princeton).
Pfarr’s invitation to the event comes after he put together one of the best statistical seasons in Gopher Wrestling history last year. Pfarr went 40-4 in his first year wrestling at 197. He became just the tenth Gopher all-time to reach the 40-win mark in a single season, and the first since 2007. His 18 major decisions were the most by a Gopher in more than 20 years. He also accomplished the rare feat of earning All-America honors both on the mat with his performance at NCAAs, and in the classroom as a CoSIDA Academic All-American.
Pfarr’s will be the 17th match at the All-Star Classic to feature a Gopher in the past 13 years. Pfarr’s weight, 197, is the most commonly represented weight for Minnesota in that span, with Roger Kish (2007), Sonny Yohn (2010) and Scott Schiller (2013, 2014) all competing at that weight in the event in the past decade.
The annual preseason showcase will take place Nov. 5, beginning at 6 p.m. Central from the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The event will be streamed live on TrackWrestling.com. Get updates throughout the match by following Gopher Wrestling on Twitter.
