The Big Ten Conference announced today that Minnesota’s Brett Pfarr earned the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honor for his decisive victory over No. 6 Preston Weigel (Oklahoma State) last Sunday. This is the second time the conference has recognized Pfarr as its Wrestler of the Week. The senior captain also earned the award in November 2015 after sweeping three matches at the Gopher Duals, including wins over two top-15 opponents.
In his bout with Weigel last Sunday, Pfarr shook off a slow start to take down Weigel three times, including a match-clinching takedown late in the third period to seal the 7-2 victory. It was Pfarr’s second consecutive match against a top-six opponent, eight days removed from his 7-0 win over No. 5 Nate Rotert (South Dakota State). In those two matches, Pfarr did not surrender a single takedown to either of his opponents.
With his victory on Sunday, Pfarr is now 2-0 against ranked opponents this season and a perfect 5-0 overall. He also holds a win over No. 4 Brett Harner (Princeton), a 7-4 decision, that doesn’t count on his record since it came at the NWCA All-Star Classic exhibition to kick off the college wrestling season. Going back to last year, Pfarr’s first wrestling at 197 pounds, he is 19-4 against ranked opponents. At 197, he has not lost to any wrestler ranked worse than fourth in the nation.
Pfarr and his Gopher teammates return to action this Friday and Saturday at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, where Pfarr finished as the runner-up last season.
