DECORAH, Iowa – Thirteen Saint John’s wrestling student-athletes competed at the Luther Open on Saturday, Nov. 12, in Decorah, Iowa.
The tournament boasted a number of wrestlers from strong programs, including Division I Iowa, Division II MSU-Mankato, II Upper Iowa, No. 1 Wartburg (Iowa), No. 6 Wisconsin-La Crosse and No. 15 Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Freshman Noah Becker (Browerville, Minn.) led SJU with a 4-2 record, which was good for a fourth-place finish in the silver bracket at 133 pounds. He won his first three matches of the day via major decision before falling to Amier Khamis of Coe (Iowa) in overtime, 2-1, in the semifinal. He bounced back with an 8-3 win but fell to Iowa’s Jack Wagner, 19-9, in the third-place match.
Seniors Teddy Erickson (174 pounds; Annandale, Minn.) and Adam Sutlief (141; Browerville, Minn.), and sophomore Jack Barsody (174; Onamia, Minn./Milaca) each went 1-2 in the regular bracket.
The Johnnies continue their road tour at the Augsburg Open next Saturday, Nov. 19. The tournament is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start in Minneapolis.
