Mankato, Minn. — The Minnesota State wrestling team enters the 2016-17 season tied for fifth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Coaches Preseason Poll.
St. Cloud State, which has won the last two NCAA Division II titles, is rated first and followed by Upper Iowa, Augustana, Northern State, Minnesota State and MSU-Moorhead, Mary, Southwest Minnesota State and Minot State.
Maverick individuals and their NSIC league preseason rankings include senior Trevor Schultz (6th/125), sophomore Paul Selman (5th/133), junior Tanner Mills (5th, 141), sophomore Daniel Close (6th/149), junior Dylan Herman (7th/157), freshman Zach Johnston (8th/165), senior Adam Cooling (1st/174), junior Corey Abernathy (4th/184), senior Darick Vancura (4th/197) and junior Chris Zimmer (5th/285).
Cooling, who earned a third-place finish at last year’s NCAA DII national tournament, heads into his senior season owning a 72-21 career record. Close went 23-15 in his first season of college wrestling last year. Zimmer posted a 22-9 record in 2015-16, while Vancura was 14-14, Mills was 10-7 and Abernathy registered a 4-1 record.
Minnesota State opens its season Nov. 5 at the Rochester Community & Technical College Tournament in Rochester, Minn.
