The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team open its 2016-17 season with a strong showing at the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open in Moorhead, Minn. on Saturday, Nov. 19. The SCSU contingent brought home three weight bracket titles from the tournament. Of note, no team scores were kept at the Open.
At 125-pounds, SCSU was led by Joel Salomon, who placed second in the tournament’s Gold Division. He lost in the final bout to North Dakota State’s Paul Bianchi. Teammate Brandon Briggs placed third for the Huskies at 125. At 133-pounds, SCSU’s top placer was Jordan Aquino, who placed third in the Gold Division.
At 141-pounds, senior Matt Nelson brought home one of the SCSU titles with a 13-1 major decision victory over David Flynn of NDSU in the title bout. Adam Hedin placed third and Daniel Polanco placed sixth in the tournament at 141.
At 149-pounds, James Pleski placed second for SCSU. In the title match, Pleski lost a close 3-2 decision against NDSU’s Kyle Gliva. Teammate Brett Stolarzyk placed fifth for SCSU at 149. In action at 157, SCSU’s Travis Holt placed second and Larry Bomstad added a third place finish for SCSU.
At 165-pounds, Josh Berg scored a second place finish and Gabe Fogarty was third for SCSU in the Gold Division. At 174-pounds, Clayton Jennissen placed second and teammate Austin Rake was third in the bracket. Tanner Schaefer also placed sixth for SCSU at 174-pouns in the Gold Division.
The Huskies dominated the 197-pound bracket with a first place finish by Vince Dietz. He won the top spot with a 7-2 victory over teammate Uthman Rabiu in the title bout. To wrap up the day’s action in the Gold Division brackets, SCSU senior Austin Goergen scored a first place finish at 285-pounds. He won the title with a 4-0 record that included two major decisions and two tech falls.
