SDSU wrestlers aiming high in Big 12

The 2015-16 season was the best one in the Division I era for the South Dakota State wrestling program. That, in itself, isn’t saying a whole lot. Until Chris Bono’s arrival, the Jackrabbit wrestlers were not keeping up in the transition from Division II.

But still, going 14-6 in duals, earning the first national ranking in the Division I poll and contending for a Big 12 title in the first year as part of the conference are all pretty impressive accomplishments. Getting Bono to admit that isn’t easy, though, and that gives you an idea of what the internal expectations are like for this program.

“Last season wasn’t a complete success,” said the fifth-year coach. “The dual meet season was great. Setting attendance records and generating excitement in the program – those things were great. But we still didn’t have an All-American. We still weren’t competing for a national championship. So it wasn’t successful in my eyes.” Continue reading at
