St. Cloud State University senior Matt Nelson (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake H.S.) has been selected as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week for Nov. 14-20. Nelson gained the honor on the strength of his first place finish at 141-pounds in action at the 2016 Finn Grinaker Cobber Open on Nov. 19 in Moorhead, Minn.
In his first action of the 2016-17 season, Nelson charted a 3-0 record in the 141-pound Gold Division bracket at the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open. He opened competition with a first round bye and then charted a 16-0 tech fall win over Jamestown’s Dillion Kifer. In the following round, Nelson scored a pin at 6:12 against North Dakota State’s Nathan Smith. To cap the trip to Moorhead, Nelson won the bracket championship with 13-1 major decision victory over NCAA Division I opponent David Flynn of NDSU in the title bout.
Nelson is a team captain for the Huskies and has gained two All-America awards during his career at SCSU. Last year, he placed fifth at the NCAA Division II championships at 141-pounds and charted a 20-10 season record.
The Huskies are the two-time defending NCAA Division II champions and have won five consecutive NSIC championships under the leadership of head coach Steve Costanzo. SCSU will continue its 2016-17 season with its first dual match of the season on Dec. 1 at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn. Fans should also mark Dec. 10 on their calendar as that day SCSU will host the annual Holiday Inn/Husky Open at the Halenbeck Hall Fieldhouse. Action gets underway at 9 a.m. and tickets for the open are available at the gate.
