BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Augustana wrestling team opened the 2016-17 season on Sunday at the Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D. Junior Aero Amo picked up where he left off last season with a sixth place finish at the meet.
Amo went 3-3 en route to a sixth-place finish at the Daktronics Open and wrestled four Division I grapplers. Amo defeated Dalton Lunde of Minnesota (5-3), and pinned both Josh Tapia of Briar Cliff and Anthony Anderson of Arizona State. Amo twice fell to Nebraska’s Taylor Venz who took fifth and to Brady Ayers of SDSU who took third.
Senior Michael Lowman went 2-2 at 285 pounds at the meet. Lowman defeated Amari Latimer of Iowa Central CC, 7-0 and beat U-Mary’s Dominic Tudor by tech fall. Lowman fell to three-time Division I NCAA tournament qualifier in Nebraska’s Colin Jensen and his brother Nebraska’s David Jensen.
Senior Brandon Charbonneau finished the Open with a 2-2 mark at 141 pounds. Charbonneau dropped his first match before winning two wrestleback matches. Charbonneau dropped his second match to Gannon Volk of Minnesota.
Also at 141 pounds, Austin Jordan and Deven Donais each picked up a victory at the meet. Jordan took down Cole Race of Iowa Central CC by a 6-3 decision. Donais defeated Terrance Thompson of Iowa Central CC by a 6-4 decision.
At 157 pounds, Bailey Neises went 2-2 earning his victories by tech fall and by a 9-3 decision. Tyler Nation defeated Keenan Cook of Iowa Central CC by a 6-0 decision.
Colin Ayers at 149 pounds and Adrian Lozano at 133 pounds each got one victory at the Daktronics Open.
Next up for the Vikings will be the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday, Nov. 12. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m.
