INDIANAPOLIS – Augustana’s Aero Amo and Michael Lowman each left the Midwest Classic with top finishes. Amo took fourth at 184 pounds and Lowman finished in fifth at 285 pounds in Indianapolis on Sunday.
Amo defeated a pair of ranked wrestlers on Sunday and took a medical forfeit in the third-place match to finish fourth. No. 2 Amo defeated No. 6 Taylor DeLong of UIndy in his first consolation match of the day by a 5-0 decision.
The consolation semis pitted the No. 1 and No. 2 wrestlers in Division II (according to D2wrestle.com) at 184 pounds. No. 2 Amo came away with a first period pin against No. 1 Zeb Wahle of Maryville.
Unranked Lowman also defeated a pair of ranked wrestlers on Sunday en route to a fifth place finish. Lowman upset No. 9 DJ Sims of Pitt Johnstown with a third period fall in the first consolation match of the day. Lowman fell in the in the consolation semis to No. 3 Andy Welton of Mercyhurst.
In the fifth place match, Lowman went on to get his second upset of the day defeated No. 11 Dylan Faulkenberg of UIndy by a 3-1 decision.
As a team, Augustana finished 19th in the team rankings with 43 points. The Vikings started the day at 23rd and the performances by Amo and Lowman propelled forward four places on Sunday.
Wisconsin-Parkside took home the team title after accumulating 112 points. Maryville (94 pts), Pitt Johnstown (90.5 pts.), Northern State (84 pts) and Ashland (83.5 pts) rounded out the top-five.
The Vikings will have next week off for the Holiday break and will return to action for the Warrior-Viking Open on Dec. 31 in Fremont, Neb. beginning at 9 a.m.
