In this week’s Coach’s Corner, head coach Brandon Eggum looks back at a strong weekend for the Gophers, one in which the varsity squad took fourth and won two individual championships at the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational and where a pair of unattached competitors won titles at the UNI Open.
Eggum talks about how he saw improvements from all his wrestlers in Las Vegas, sharing his strongest praise for individual champions No. 12 Jake Short (157 pounds) and No. 2 Brett Pfarr (197 pounds), as well as true freshman No. 17 Mitch McKee (133) and two-time All-American No. 6 Michael Kroells (285). Eggum also provides updates on the two Gophers who departed last weekend’s tournament with injuries – Gannon Volk (141) and No. 16 Nick Wanzek (174). He expects both to be ready to wrestle this weekend against Michigan State and Michigan.
While that group was in Vegas, another contingent of Minnesota wrestlers were in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for the UNI Open. A pair of unattached Gophers won individual titles in that event – Ethan Lizak (125) and Tommy Thorn (141). Eggum also touches on a second-place finish for heavyweight Rylee Streifel and the third-place run for Brandon Krone (174), who also wrestled unattached.
