SCSU’s Vince Dietz named NSIC Wrestler of the Week

St. Cloud State University redshirt sophomore Vince Dietz has been selected as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4. A resident of Homer Glen, Ill. and a graduate of Lockport Township H.S., Dietz wrestles for the #1 nationally ranked Huskies at 197-pounds.

Dietz gained the honors by placing third in the 197-pound bracket at the elite University of Northern Iowa Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Dec. 3. Dietz finished the day with a 3-1 record for the Huskies.

scsulogoIn the quarterfinals, won by fall over Jeremy Rodman of NCAA DI Northern Iowa with a time of 1:41. In his consolation victories, Dietz won by a tech fall over South Dakota State’s Nolan Funk and he placed third with an 8-0 major decision over Joe Teague of Iowa State University.

Of note, Dietz’ lone loss at the tournament was in the semifinals against Missouri’s J’den Cox, who won a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics for team USA.

Dietz also helped the Huskies open their 2016-17 NSIC season on the upswing with a 15-2 major decision win over Southwest Minnesota State’s Jackson Ryan at 197-pounds on Dec. 1 in Marshall, Minn. SCSU went on to win the dual match against SMSU by a tally of 36-3. Of note, SCSU has now won 45 consecutive dual matches in NSIC dual match competition.

The Huskies will next host the annual Holiday Inn/Husky Open at the Halenbeck Hall Fieldhouse on Dec. 10. The action gets underway at 9 a.m. and the tournament features many of the region’s top collegiate wrestlers and programs. Tickets are available at the gate.
