St. Cloud State opens dual match season on Dec. 1

The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (0-0, 0-0 NSIC) will open its 2016-17 dual match and NSIC season on Thursday, Dec. 1 with a 7 p.m. match at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn.

The match will begin the Huskies’ defense of their NSIC crown, which they claimed in 2015-16 with an 8-0 league record (16-1 overall). SCSU has won the last five NSIC championships under the leadership of head coach Steve Costanzo. This includes NSIC team titles in 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012.

SCSU will complete its weekend with a trip to the UNI Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Saturday, Dec. 3.

  • The Huskies are the two-time defending NCAA Division II champions. SCSU has won the NCAA DII team title in 2015 and 2016. Last year, the Huskies saw seven of its wrestlers gain All-America status at the NCAA finals. SCSU wrestlers who earned All-America status in 2016 including these returning athletes: Brett Velasquez (1st place at 125), Clayton Jennissen (7th place at 174), Matt Nelson (5th place at 141), Austin Goergen (3rd place at 285) and Uthman Rabiu (8th place at 184).
  • SCSU’s Austin Goergen is a three-time All-American for the Huskies at 285. Matt Nelson is a two-time All-American for the Huskies at 141 and Gabe Fogarty has earned All-America status at 165 in 2013, 2014 and 2015. He was a redshirt at SCSU in 2015-16.
  • SCSU’s Austin Goergen has 51 career falls for the Huskies. Of note, he owns a 108-12 career record at SCSU.
  • Matt Nelson was selected as the NSIC Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 21 after his first place finish in the 141-pound bracket at the Cobber Open on Nov. 19.
  • The Huskies will compete at the UNI Open in Dec. 3. The tournament will be held on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
