St. Cloud State retains #1 national ranking

In the first regular season ranking of the season, defending national champion St. Cloud State University tops the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association poll, released Dec. 12 on D2wrestle.com

The Huskies feature six nationally-ranked wrestlers, led by Brett Valazquez at 125-pounds and Austin Goergen at 285-pounds, with both student-athletes topping their weight class in the individual rankings.

scsulogoSCSU’s other ranked wrestlers in the poll included Clayton Jennissen, ranked fifth at 174-pounds and Vince Dietz, who was ranked fifth at 197-pounds. SCSU wrestlers ranked sixth in the poll were Matt Nelson at 141-pounds, Larry Bomstad at 157-pounds and Gabe Fogarty at 165-pounds.

The Huskies led the national poll with 61 points, while Maryville was ranked second in the poll with 50 points.

SCSU has won NCAA Division II championships in 2015 and 2016, and the Huskies have won five consecutive NSIC championships in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

The next ranking will be published during the first week of the New Year.

The Huskies will return to action on Dec. 31 with a home dual match against Concordia-Moorhead. The match gets underway in Halenbeck Hall at 1 p.m.
