CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Three South Dakota State wrestlers earned spots in the top six of their respective weight classes during competition Saturday at the UNI Open.
Sharing the highest finish by a Jackrabbit were fifth-place finishers Brady Ayers at 184 pounds and Nolan Funk in the 197-pound weight class. Ayers, a senior from Waterville, Minnesota, recorded a fifth-place finish with a 5-3 decision over Darius Wright of Minnesota in his final match of the day.
Ayers opened the day with a 15-5 major decision over Faris Karaborni of Minnesota before dropping a 4-3 decision to Jacob Holschlag of Northern Iowa in the quarterfinals. He then came back with a pair of victories in the wrestlebacks before dropping a 4-2, double-overtime decision to Chris Pfarr of Minnesota to be sent into the fifth-place match.
Fellow freshman Colten Carlson placed sixth in the 157-pound division with a 4-3 record on the day. Two of Carlson’s losses came at the hands of Minnesota’s Carson Brolsma, 6-4, in his first match of the day and by a 16-1 count in the fifth-place match. In between, Carlson won four consecutive matches in the consolation bracket, including a 13-5 major decision over Nick Gasbarro and a first-period pin of Carver James, both of Illinois.
The Jackrabbits wrap up a busy weekend of competition on Sunday by wrestling three duals at the South Dakota Showcase in Sioux Falls. Action begins at noon at the Sanford Pentagon.
