#1 Huskies advance with two wins at NWCA DII National Duals

The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (4-0, 1-0 NSIC) advanced with a pair of victories at the 2017 NWCA Division II National Duals tournament in Fort Wayne, Ind. on Thursday, Jan. 5. The Huskies opened with a big 37-11 first round victory over San Francisco State University and then advanced to the tournament semifinals with a 37-6 victory over #8 Pittsburgh-Johnstown.

The pair of victories moves SCSU into a semifinal showdown against #5 Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday, Jan. 6 at 10:00 a.m. (CT) in Fort Wayne, Ind. UW-Parkside advanced with a 20-16 win over NSIC rival Upper Iowa and a 26-9 victory over #4 Nebraska-Kearney.

scsulogoThe Huskies started the day in top order as they charted four falls in the win over San Francisco State. Brett Velasquez (125), Mike Rhone (141), Travis Holt (157) and Austin Goergen (285) all gained falls against SFSU. Clayton Jennissen added extra points with a 11-3 major decision win at 174-pounds, while decision victories went to Jarred Oftedahl (133), Chevy Farris (184) and Vince Dietz (197).

In the second match of the day, Rhone added his second fall of the day at 133-pounds and Goergen also gained a quick pin at 1:50 in action at 285-pounds. At 149-pounds, James Pleski also carded a pin against Boe Bonzo of Pitt-Johnstown at 3:50, and Dietz added a pin at 197-pounds. Velasquez got the ball rolling for the Huskies with a 15-7 major decision win at 125-pounds while Larry Bomstad posted a decision victory at 157-pounds.

A historic moment for the Huskies happened at 174-pounds as Jennissen recorded his 100th career win with his 3-2 win over #11 John Blakenship of PJU. In four seasons with the Huskies, Jennissen has gained a 100-40 career record and is a returning All-American at 174-pounds. To complete the match, SCSU’s Uthman Rabiu grabbed a 12-10 win at 184-pounds for the Huskies against PJU.
