Auggies advance to NWCA National Duals semifinals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Augsburg College advanced to the semifinals of the 2017 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III National Duals with two dominating victories on Thursday at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Augsburg, ranked No. 3 in the latest NWCA Division III national poll, advanced to the semifinals of the National Duals with two victories on Thursday, topping Springfield (Mass.) 38-11 and No. 22-ranked Ferrum (Va.) 34-9. Augsburg won 14 of 20 individual bouts in the two duals.

Augsburg will face No. 2-ranked Ithaca (N.Y.) in the National Duals semifinals on Friday (1/6) at 10 a.m. (Central time). Ithaca advanced to the semifinals with a 27-16 win over Augustana (Ill.) and 23-15, come-from-behind win over No. 18 Wisconsin-Whitewater in the quarterfinals.

Top-seed Wartburg (Iowa) and No. 6-ranked Johnson & Wales (R.I.) will meet in the other semifinal on Friday. Championship and third-place matches will be on Friday at 1 p.m. (Central time).

augslogoIn Thursday’s action, Augsburg claimed nine pins, a major decision and a technical fall among its 14 victories. The Auggies had five pins in the win over Springfield, and had four pins in its final five bouts in the win over Ferrum.

Owen Webster (FY, Shakopee, Minn.) extended his individual winning streak to 14, claiming two pins on Thursday, including a 33-second pin in his opening bout. Webster, ranked No. 2 nationally at 184 pounds, is now 17-1 on the season with 13 bonus-point wins (three pins, four technical falls, four major decisions).

Heavyweight Donny Longendyke (SR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), ranked No. 2 nationally, also scored two pins on Thursday to improve to 6-0 on the season with four pins. The 2015 NCAA Division III national champion and 2015 national runner-up at heavyweight, Longendyke is now 89-5 with 50 pins in his Augsburg career and 129-26 with 73 pins in his college career (including his first season at Division I Nebraska).

Lucas Jeske (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) continued his strong start ot the season, improving to 7-0 with two pins at 165 pounds. He now has three pins and a major decision among his seven victories.

David Flynn (FY, Jordan, Minn./Scott West), who transferred to Augsburg from Division I North Dakota State at the semester break, improved to 14-4 on the season (5-1 at Augsburg) with a pin and major decision at 141 pounds on Thursday. He now has two pins, a technical fall and four major decisions among his 14 victories this year.

Ryan Epps (FY, Cannon Falls, Minn.) improved to 14-1 on the season with two victories at 149, including a 15-0, technical-fall triumph in his opening match against Springfield. He now has a pin, two technical falls and three major decisions among his 14 wins.

Victor Gliva (FY, Farmington, Minn.) also claimed two victories at 125, including a pin, in Thursday’s action to improve to 14-4 on the season, with three pins, two technical falls and two major decisions.

No. 5-ranked 133-pounder Sam Bennyhoff (SO, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) went 1-1 on the day, as did 174-pounder Austin Boniface (SR, Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS).

Augsburg is now 49-14 in National Duals competition since the NWCA split the event into divisional competition in 2002. In 63 NWCA Division III National Duals meets, Augsburg has now outscored its competition by a 1,751-764 margin, an average score of 27.8 to 12.1. In 15 NWCA National Duals appearances overall (since 1992), Augsburg is now 54-23.

Augsburg is now assured of a top-four finish for the 13th time in its 16 NWCA Division III National Duals competitions. The Auggies have won the title five times (2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010), while finishing second four times (2003, 2004, 2006, 2012), third twice (2008, 2011) and fourth once (2014).

Against opponents from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is now 310-47-1 in dual meets since the 1989-90 season. Augsburg has lost just 43 matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season. Against strictly NCAA Division III opponents, Augsburg is 301-46-1 since the 1979-80 season. Since the 1989-90 season, Augsburg is 226-36-1 against Division III opponents.
