COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — The Augsburg College wrestling team claimed three individual champions and 15 individual placewinners at the Saint John’s University North Country Open, held on Sunday. No team scores were kept at the open meet, which attracted wrestlers from nine different schools across all three NCAA divisions.
Owen Webster (FY, Shakopee, Minn.), who moved into the No. 1 spot in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings at 184 pounds, improved to 24-1 on the season and extended his winning streak to 21 straight matches with three wins on Sunday. He finished his day with a 12-2, major-decision win over North Dakota State’s Logan Paxton in the championship match, his 17th bonus-point victory of the season (five pins, four technical falls, eight major decisions) and his third tournament championship of the season.
No. 3-ranked heavyweight Donny Longendyke (SR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) used two pins to reach the finals, then dispatched Colin Fisher of Saint John’s 7-3 to win the weight-class crown, his third tournament title of the year. Longendyke is now 16-1 this season with 11 pins. He improved to 140-27 in his college career with 80 pins, and 99-6 in his three seasons at Augsburg with 57 pins.
Sebastian Larson (JR, River Falls, Wis.) had an impressive performance at 197 pounds to claim the weight-class title, his first tournament title of the season. He scored two major-decision wins to reach the finals, then went to overtime in the final match with St. Cloud State’s Adam Josephson, where he won 3-1.
Five Auggies earned tournament runner-up honors on Sunday. No. 7-ranked 141-pounder David Flynn (FY, Jordan, Minn./Scott West), a transfer from Division I North Dakota State, finished 2-1 with a major decision on the day. No. 9-ranked 149-pounder Ryan Epps (FY, Cannon Falls, Minn.) also went 2-1 to finish second, as did Sam Bennyhoff (SO, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) at 133. Tanner Vassar (FY, Maple Lake, Minn.) went 3-1 to place second at 157, and Victor Gliva (FY, Farmington, Minn.), the No. 5-ranked 125-pounder nationally, went 2-0 with a technical fall to reach the finals, but had to end with a medical forfeit.
Tone Fuenffinger (JR, Hibbing, Minn.) and Kayde Bartels shared third place at 157, while Alex Wilson (SO, Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) placed third at 149.
Placing fourth for the Auggies were James Goman (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Trinity-River Ridge HS) at 141 and Austin Boniface (SR, Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) at 174. Brady McFarland (SO, Windlake, Wis./Muskego HS) placed sixth at 165, as did Brent Chambers (FY, Princeton, Minn.) at 197.
