Champagne wins Ridgewater Open title

Returning from an injury that had kept him out of competition to this point of his redshirt season, Minnesota’s Jose Champagne made an impression in his first collegiate tournament, cruising to the 157-pound at the Ridgewater Open on Saturday. Champagne not only put together a 4-0 day, he earned bonus-point wins in three of those matches.

Champagne made his collegiate debut with a tech fall over Mitch Long (RCTC), a 22-6 drubbing. He followed up that performance with his closest match of the afternoon, an 8-4 decision over Colton Carlson (South Dakota State).

While his opening victories were strong, Champagne put together an even stronger finish, and did so in a fraction of the time. First, he pinned Dakota Drenth (Morningside) late in the first period of their semifinal contest to pick up his first collegiate fall. He followed that performance with his second career pin, this one in just 80 seconds to defeat Brett Bye (South Dakota State) in the championships match.

With his title, Champagne is the first Gopher since Bobby Steveson to win his first career tournament. Steveson won the 197-pound championship at last year’s Cobber Open.
