MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team are preparing for two home conference matches to start the 2017 calendar year, as the Dragons host the Upper Iowa Peacocks Friday night, and the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks on Saturday afternoon at Nemzek Fieldhouse.
The last time that the Dragons took the mat was at the Desert Duals on Dec. 19. There, they went 2-2 on the day, as they defeated Menlo and California Baptist while losing to Embry-Riddle and Wheeling Jesuit. The last time that the Dragons took the mat at home was on Dec. 8 when they lost to Division 3 Augsburg 25-12. The Dragons are now 3-4 in dual matches this season. Senior Blake Bosch went 4-0 on the day to pace MSUM.
Bosch hits 100 wins
Bosch picked up his 100th win of his career with a pin of Trent Smith of California Baptist at the Desert Duals. Bosch went 4-0 on the day and now has a career record of 101-34. He is just 21 wins away from tying the all-time school wins record held by Hall of Famer Nate Hendrickson, who went 122-13 as a Dragon. Bosch is ranked third in the nation at 133 pounds.
The two home matches this weekend are two of just three home matches that the Dragons have this semester. The final one is on Jan. 27, when they host Northern State. They will wrestle five road matches, including trips to St. Cloud, Bismarck, Sioux Falls, Marshall, and Minot before returning home to host the regional tournament on Feb. 24-25.
Bosch is 18-1 on the season for MSUM while senior Nader Abdullatif is 12-7 at 285. Sophomore Adam Blees is 10-5 at 174. Senior Isaac Novacek (157) and sophomore Jared Goldsmith (125) each have a winning record.
Head coach Kris Nelson is in his eighth year as head coach of the Dragons.
About the Peacocks
Upper Iowa enters the match with a 6-2 record in dual meets, including wins over NSIC rivals Minot State, and the University of Mary. They last competed at the NWCA National Duals, where they went 2-2, with wins over Tiffin University and Maryville University.
The Peacocks are led by redshirt senior Colbey Vance (197), who has an 18-5 record on the season. Redshirt sophomore Damian Penichet (165) is 17-5 on the season, while redshirt senior Logan Hopp (285) is 13-4 on the season. Head coach Heath Grimm is in his 17th season as head coach of the Peacocks.
About the Mavericks
MSU Mankato enters the match with a 3-3 record, with one match still to be wrestled on Wednesday night. They are 1-0 in conference matches, with a win over Minot State University. They last competed at the Tracy Borah Duals, where they went 1-3, with their only win coming against New Mexico Highlands. The Mavericks are led by Matthew Blome (184), who has a 17-3 record this season. Logan Saltou (15-8) and Corey Abernathy (14-5) also are at the top for the Mavericks. Head coach Jim Makovsky is in his 24th season as head coach of the Mavericks.
