GUNNISON, Colo. – Minnesota State (3-3, 1-0 NSIC) competed in the Tracy Borah Duals in Gunnison Colorado Saturday. There they faced several nationally recognized squads, serving as an early test for the Mavericks as they began their 2017 schedule finishing 1-3 at the duals.
Minnesota State won three matches in their first dual meet of the day at the Tracy Borah Duals. The Mavericks were first matched up against a Western State team that has been receiving votes in the latest national poll. The Mavericks fell behind early and a decision victory by Louie Sanders (R-Fr., 141 lbs.) over Seth Rich secured Minnesota State’s first team points of the dual. Adam Cooling (Sr., 174 lbs.) and Matthew Blome (Fr., 184 lbs.) were the only other Mavericks to gain victories against Western State that resulted in a final team score of 13-36.
In the third round of duals Minnesota State defeated New Mexico Highlands in six out of ten matches resulting in a final score of 31-15. Trevor Schultz (Sr., 125 lbs.) got the Mavericks off the mark with a fall in 5:00 in the first match of the dual. Sanders and Close added an 11-5 decision and 21-2 technical fall respectively to make the lead 14-6 through five matches.
The second half of the dual would see three more Maverick victories to seal the win. Cooling earned a 21-2 technical fall and Abernathy secured a fall in 3:37. Blome had a fall in 2:20 while wrestling up a weight class in the Mavericks win over New Mexico Highlands.
Minnesota State would face the 12th ranked California Baptist University in their last match of the day. The Mavericks won three matches against the lancers finishing with a final score of 15-33. Schultz again led the Mavericks off with a win, starting the match with a fall in 3:21. Dylan Herman (Jr., 157 lbs.) would add a second fall at the 157-pound weight class.
