Minnesota State 22, MSU-Moorhead 18

MOORHEAD, Minn- The Minnesota State wrestling team returned to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday afternoon against the Dragons of Minnesota State Moorhead. The Mavericks would take six matches on their way to a 22-18 victory.

Andrew McFall (R-Fr., 125 lbs.) got the Mavericks started in Moorhead. McFall was seeing his first action with Minnesota State in Saturday’s dual. McFall got to work early scoring a takedown in the first minute of the match. McFall was dominant throughout recording a 7-2 decision victory in his first match of the year.

Paul Selman (So., 133 lbs.) had a tough matchup against the third-ranked wrestler in the nation, Blake Bosch. Selman was active in the first period, staying aggressive on his feet. In the second period, Selman caught Bosch in a cradle and nearly completed the upset. After battling tough, Selman dropped a 7-11 decision.

manklogo Louie Sanders (R-Fr., 141 lbs.) took on Kristian Vazquez and scored two takedowns in the first and tilted Vazquez for nearfall. Sanders demonstrated strong takedown defense during his 14-4 major decision. Tanner Mills (Jr., 141 lbs.) wrestled in a hurried first period and was caught by Dylan Connell, losing by a pin in 1:40. Tanner Mills (Fr., 157 lbs.) trialed Isaac Novacek 4-6 in the waning moments of the third period and could not convert his takedown attempt to tie the match.

After five matches the Mavericks trailed the Dragons 7-12 with Dylan Herman (Jr., 165 lbs.) taking the mat. Herman scored a six-point throw in the first period and would get the pin he worked for at the 3:47 mark. Herman’s pin regained a 13-12 Maverick lead in the Dual.

Adam Cooling (Sr., 174 lbs.) surrendered the first points of the match in the second period and took a one-point lead into the third. Cooling wrestled smart on his feet and won the match by a 3-1 decision, improving his record to 23-1 on the season. Matthew Blome (Fr., 184 lbs.) kept the Mavericks on the front foot earning a 13-6 decision and never trailed in his match against Logan Rhode.

The final two matches of the dual featured Chaydon O’Fallon (Jr., 197 lbs.) and Chris Zimmer (Jr., 285 lbs.) for Minnesota State. O’Fallon took the mat against Cody Anderson and was the aggressor for the majority of the match. O’Fallon defeated Anderson by a 5-1 decision, putting the dual out of reach for the Dragons. Zimmer scored a takedown in a scramble on the edge of the mat late in the first period but ultimately fell to Nader Abdullatif by a fall in 3:52.

With the victory, the Mavericks improved their record to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in conference.

The Dragons will compete at No. 1-ranked St. Cloud State on Thursday night in St. Cloud, Minn.

Minnesota State is back in action Friday, Jan. 20 at Taylor Center against the University of Mary at 7 p.m.
