Minnesota State 33 University of Mary 7

MANKATO, Minn- Minnesota State (6-3, 3-0 NSIC) took eight out of ten matches Friday night at Taylor Center to defeat the University of Mary Marauders by a score of 33-7. With the victory the Mavericks were able to stay unbeaten against conference opponents and establish a three dual win streak.

Minnesota State had a slow start to the match against the Marauders, dropping a major decision and a decision at the 125 and 133 pound weight classes. Trailing by a team score of 7-0 the Mavericks went on to gain results in eight straight matches to overcome the early deficit.Louie Sanders (R-Fr., 141 lbs.) was able to edge Reed Cronin by an 11-10 decision to start the run for the Mavericks. In a match that saw both wrestlers take the lead, Sanders scored an escape with less than ten seconds on the clock to secure the victory.

manklogo Daniel Close (So., 149 lbs.) was dominant in his match, surrendering only one point to Hunter Eckert in the first period during his 8-1 decision. Logan Saltou (Fr., 157 lbs.) was quick to start, jumping out to a 7-3 lead after the first period. Saltou scored a takedown and registered nearfall in opening 90 seconds against Donnie Leuer to take a 6-0 lead in the match. Saltou weathered strong pressure by Leuer in the third period to win by a 15-8 decision.

The Mavericks continued to keep the momentum going when Dylan Herman (Jr., 157 lbs.) and Paul Michaelson went into the second period of their match with neither wrestler having scored. Herman showed great scrambling and control on the mat when he was able to tie Michaelson up for the pin in 4:28. The Mavericks were leading 15-7 when Adam Cooling (Sr., 174 lbs.) garnered a 12-4 major decision over Dane Fischer, and Matthew Blome (Fr., 184 lbs.) added to the Mavericks advantage by achieving a first period 15-0 technical fall over Jonathan Pelach.

In the final two matches of the dual, Chaydon O’Fallon (Jr., 197 lbs.) received a forfeit for the Mavericks, taking the team score to 30-7. Chris Zimmer (Jr., 285 lbs.) wrestled in a close match to cap the night with a victory for the Mavericks. Dominic Tudor took a 1-0 advantage into the final period against Zimmer where Zimmer scored a flurry of points to overcome the disadvantage and defeat Tudor by a 6-2 decision.

With the victory the Mavericks improved their overall record to 6-3 on the season. Minnesota State will next take the mat against Upper Iowa on January 26 at Taylor Center with matches starting at 7:00 p.m.
