Northland clinches MCAC runner-up finish with 38-5 win over Ridgewater

Northland Community & Technical College clinched a Minnesota College Athletic Conference dual meet runner-up finish with a 38-5 win over Ridgewater College Wednesday night in Thief River Falls.

The Pioneers picked up a fall from heavyweight Desmond Bradford, a technical fall from Anthony Vizcaino at 149, a decision victory by Tanner Schreifels at 157 and forfeit victories by Rashidi Kikopa at 141, Alex Giese at 165, Nathanael Holecek at 184 and Mitchell Zachman at 197.

nctclogoRidgewater’s lone victory came at 174 pounds when Nick Stafford used a series of tilts to secure an 18-3 technical fall victory over Mike Lambert.

“This was a nice night for our program,” said Northland Head Coach Scott DCamp. “Last year, we traveled to Ridgewater and lost 39-6 when we were the team wrestling shorthanded. Mathematically, we were guaranteed to score at least 24 points before the dual even began. In that scenario, some teams may have went through the motions for an entire dual knowing that a win was probably in the bag. But our guys came out smelling blood in the water. There were four contested matches and we wanted to win all four.”

Up next for the Pioneers will be a trip Palatine, Ill., for the Harper Open Saturday.

Northland hosts the MCAC/NJCAA North District Tournament Sunday, Feb. 12 at 10 a.m.
