Johnnies roll to 42-8 dual win over St. Olaf
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John’s wrestling opened its dual schedule with a 42-8 win over St. Olaf on Thursday, Jan. 5, at Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul.
The Johnnies (1-0 dual record) took advantage of two forfeits and registered five bonus-point wins, including three pins.
SJU jumped out to a 17-0 lead thanks to a pin from freshman Anthony Hennen (Cologne, Minn./Norwood-Young America) at 125 pounds and a technical fall from classmate Noah Becker (Browerville, Minn.) at 133. The win moved Becker’s record to 13-6 on the season.
Freshman Jerod Novak (Aitkin, Minn.) chose the down position to start the third period, tied 3-3, and earned an escape to post the 4-3 win at 157 pounds.
SJU answered a technical fall at 165 pounds with 22 unanswered points to end the dual. A forfeit at 184 pounds and a 12-2 major decision from senior Robert Tait (Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) at 197 were sandwiched by a pair of pins from seniors Teddy Erickson (Annandale, Minn.) and Colin Fisher (Eagan, Minn.) at 174 pounds and heavyweight, respectively. The match was Fisher’s first of the 2016-17 campaign due to the extended football season (Fisher was the Johnnies’ starting left guard).
The Johnnies travel to Chicago for three duals this Saturday, Jan. 7: No. 7 Wabash, Ind. (1 p.m.); Manchester, Ind. (3 p.m.); and the Milwaukee School of Engineering, Wis. (5 p.m.).
