SMSU opens the new year with trip to Western State Duals

MARSHALL, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State will continue dual action this weekend when they open the new year with a trip to Gunnison, Colo., to compete in the 27th Annual Tracy Borah Duals beginning this Saturday, Jan. 7, in the Mountaineer Field House on the campus of Western State Colorado University.

SERIES HISTORY (Colorado Mesa):
Colorado Mesa leads the all-time series with SMSU 2-1. Colorado Mesa won the last meeting between the two schools 29-9 back in 2014-15.

SERIES HISTORY (Western State):
SMSU is tied 1-1 in the all-time series with Western State. SMSU won the previous matchup 19-17.

SERIES HISTORY (California Baptist):
SMSU won the only meeting between the two schools 28-15 back in the 2012-13 season.

SERIES HISTORY (New Mexico Highlands):
SMSU will meet New Mexico Highlands for the first time this weekend.

SMSU HEAD COACH:
Jesse Nelson is in his 10th season as head coach at SMSU in 2016-17. Nelson was named the fourth coach in the program history on Aug. 22, 2007. Nelson, the 2013-14 NSIC Coach of the Year, has a dual record of 56-64-1, including 19-38 in conference matches. During his tenure, Nelson has groomed 19 national qualifiers—11 in the last three seasons alone—seven All-NSIC wrestlers, including three two-time NCAA qualifiers and three three-time NCAA qualifiers.

SEASON LEADERS:
Four Mustangs have racked up at least 10 wins so far this season… Cole Hennen is 10-5 this year at 197… Cortez Arredondo is 11-7 at 149… Kegen Fingalsen is 12-7 at 174… Griffin Osing has posted a 12-5 mark at 184 for the Mustangs.

LAST TIME OUT:
The Mustangs were last in action in the Augustana Duals in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Dec. 10. SMSU went 2-2 in the Augie Duals with a 35-9 win over Morningside (Iowa) and a 39-7 win over Truman State (Mo.). The Mustangs were defeated on the day by Northwestern Iowa and Nebraska-Kearney. Griffin Osing went 3-0 on the day Kegen Fingalsen finished the day 3-1.

PRESEASON NSIC POLL
Southwest Minnesota State was picked to finish tied for seventh in the NSIC preseason poll.

UP NEXT
Southwest Minnesota State will face Dakota-Wesleyan (S.D.) next Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 7 p.m., in a dual match that was rescheduled from Nov. 17. SMSU will then head to Kearney, Neb., to compete in the Nebraska-Kearney Duals on Jan. 14.
