The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (9-1, 1-0 NSIC) will return to action in the always rugged Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference this week with a pair of league dates against Minnesota State University Moorhead and Northern State University.
On Thursday, Jan. 19, the Huskies will host MSU-Moorhead (3-6, 0-2 NSIC) at Halenbeck Hall. SCSU will complete its week with a home match against Northern State (4-5, 0-1 NSIC) on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall. The match against NSU has been designated as Military and Veteran Appreciation Day at St. Cloud State. All active military and veterans will be admitted to the match that day for free. Tickets for these home matches can be purchased at the gate and all SCSU students get into the matches for free.

The Huskies were ranked #1 as a team in the latest NCAA Division II coaches poll
The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (9-1, 1-0 NSIC) charted a pair of victories and one loss at the 2017 Ranger Duals tournament, which was held at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wisc. on Saturday, Jan. 14. The Huskies opened the day with a 30-6 victory over #8 McKendree. A highlight of the match was Mike Rhone’s 10-7 win over #9 ranked Naquan Hardy at 133 pounds. In the second match of the day, SCSU suffered its first dual loss of the season with a 22-17 setback against Indianapolis. To complete the day, SCSU posted a 31-10 win over #8 ranked Findlay. Brett Velasquez, Vince Dietz and Austin Goergen all earned three victories in the duals at the Ranger Duals on the day.
Vince Dietz leads SCSU this season with 19 wins (19-1), while Austin Goergen is a close second with a 17-0 record. Clayton Jennissen owns a 15-5 record this winter and James Pleski is 12-5.
Goergen leads the Huskies in 2016-17 with 10 falls, and SCSU has charted 86 falls as a team this season. Goergen has now won 18 consecutive matches dating back to the end of the 2015-16 season. In his career, Goergen has 61 falls.
As a team, SCSU’s match record this season stands at 285-135.
The loss against Indianapolis snapped a 19 dual match win streak for the Huskies. The last loss suffered by the Huskies was a 21-15 setback on Jan. 9, 2016 against Notre Dame (OH) at the NWCA DII National Duals. This was only the Huskies’ seventh dual match loss since the start of the 2010-11 season.
SCSU also posted a 41-6 win over Central Missouri at home on Jan. 12.
Next up for the Huskies is a home dual meet against St. John’s on Jan. 26. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall. The match has been designated as Youth/Middle School/Prep Night at SCSU. All youth in grade 12 or younger will be admitted for just $1. The first 50 fans in will also receive free SCSU wrestling memorabilia.
