Mustangs drop first home match of the new year to Upper Iowa
MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State (4-10, 0-2 NSIC) hosted its first home match and competed in its first NSIC match almost two full months as No. 24 Upper Iowa handed the Mustangs a 30-6 loss on Friday night in the PE Gym.
Upper Iowa, who came in at No. 24 in the latest Division II national coaches’ poll released earlier on Friday, had two major decisions and one win by tech fall in the first five weight classes to jump out to a big lead. Kegen Fingalsen won by sudden victory for SMSU at 165 and Cole Hennen won by decision at 184 but the Mustangs were unable to respond in its second home conference loss of the year.
Southwest Minnesota State will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as it hosts Augustana at 3 p.m., in the PE Gym.
