Augustana Heads to Moorhead, Minn. for Super Region 3 Championships

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana wrestling begins its trek through the postseason this weekend competing at the Super Region 3 Championships in Moorhead, Minn. The tournament will run through Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25 at the Nemzek Fieldhouse on the campus of MSU Moorhead.

Wrestling will begin on Friday at 10 a.m. and have two sessions. The second session of day one will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday’s wrestling will begin at 11 a.m. and the second session of day two will feature the medal round and will start at 4 p.m.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the national tournament in Birmingham, Ala. on March 10-11.

The Super Region 3 Championships will feature 15 teams and will include eight teams that are ranked in the most recent NWCA Division II top-25 poll. The field is headlined by two-time defending national champion No. 1 St. Cloud State.

Other ranked teams include No. 2 Maryville, No. 10 Lindenwood, No. 14 McKendree, tied at No. 19 Minnesota State and Upper Iowa, No. 22 Northern State and No. 24 Augustana.

The remaining teams in the region are MSU Moorhead, Drury, Central Missouri, U-Mary, Minot State, Truman State and Southwest Minnesota State.

Augustana’s Lineup
Augustana’s lineup will feature two former national qualifiers, nine wrestlers ranked regionally, four wrestlers ranked nationally and six first-time regional participants.

Brandon Carroll | 125 | Fr. | Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt
Carroll enters the regional as the lone true freshmen starter for the Vikings. Carroll ranks No. 6 in the region with a record of 18-10 this season. Carroll is 2-4 against wrestlers ranked in the top-12 of the region rankings. Of Carroll’s 18 wins on the season 12 have come by bonus point victories.

Brandon Charbonneau | 133 | Sr. | Emporia, Kan./Emporia
Charbonneau is a two-time regional participant for the Vikings going 2-2 last season and placing sixth as a freshman, each time competing at 141 pounds. Charbonneau posted a record of 14-13 on the season and ranks ninth in the region rankings. Charbonneau is 2-6 against wrestlers ranked in the region.

Austin Jordan | 141 | Jr. | Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area
Jordan will be wrestling in his first regional after compiling a record of 14-12 on the season. Jordan is ranked No. 7 in the region ranks and holds a record of 3-2 against ranked wrestlers in the region. Jordan recorded three falls and one tech fall this year.

Bailey Neises | 149 | RFr. | Howard, S.D./Howard
Neises takes in his first regional after sitting out last season as a redshirt. Neises has recorded a record of 10-9 on the season with six wins coming with bonus points. Neises is 0-2 against wrestlers ranked in the region and is unranked.

Tyler Nation | 157 | Sr. | Scottsbluff, Neb./Scottsbluff/IWCC
Nation brings a record of 15-9 into his first regional action as a Viking. Nation has won eight of his last 10 matches on the season and ranks fourth in the region. Nation has compiled a record of 4-2 in the region and has 50 takedowns on the season.

Mitch Rechtzigel | 165 | Jr. | Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview
Rechtzigel will enter his second regional has a Viking after going 2-2 last season at 165 pounds. Rechtzigel is 14-10 on the season but turned it up in Feb. going 5-1 in the month. Rechtzigel is ranked fourth in the region and 12th in the nation. Rechtzigel posted a record of 2-2 in the region.

Lukas Poloncic | 174 | RFr. | Gillette, Wyo./Campbell County
Poloncic goes into his first regional with a 9-9 record but has picked it up of late going 5-2 to finish the season. Poloncic is ranked fourth in the region and 11th nationally. Poloncic is 4-2 in the region and has defeated Adam Cooling the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the region.

Aero Amo | 184 | Jr. | Rapid City, S.D./Central
Amo returns as the lone national qualifier for the Vikings from last season and will compete in his third regional. Amo placed first in last season’s regional and sixth as a redshirt freshman. Amo brings a record of 31-7 into the regional with a team-high 14 falls and six tech falls. Amo is ranked fourth in the region and sixth nationally.

Ben Goodwin | 197 | Sr. | Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Puis/Minnesota West CC
Goodwin will enter is first regional with a record of 17-9. Goodwin ranks seventh in the region with a record of 6-3 in region action. Goodwin saved his best for last defeating Vince Dietz of St. Cloud State in his final match of the season. Dietz ranks third in the region and eighth nationally.

Michael Lowman | 285 | Sr. | North Highlands, Calif./Foothill
Lowman enters his third regional as a Viking and has qualified for nationals once in his career as a sophomore. Lowman ranks third in the regional and seventh nationally with a record of 23-8. Lowman is 6-1 against wrestlers in the region and is the highest ranked wrestler regionally for the Vikings.
