SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana wrestling team will host No. 1 St. Cloud State in the final dual of the season. The Vikings and Huskies will face off on Thursday, Feb. 16 at the Elmen Center at 7 p.m.
The Vikings enter the dual against St. Cloud State with a 12-6 (6-1 NSIC) record on the season. Last weekend, Augustana defeated MSU Moorhead, 32-9, before dropping its first NSIC dual of the season against Minnesota State, 21-16.
The top wrestlers for the Vikings entering the final week of the season are Aero Amo (184) and Michael Lowman (285). Amo currently ranks fifth nationally at 184 pounds with a record of 30-7 and a team-high 14 pins and six tech falls. Lowman holds a record of 23-7 with a dual record of 11-2 and eight falls on the season.
St. Cloud State comes into Thursday’s matchup with a 16-1 (7-0 NSIC) record and are ranked No. 1 in the Division II Coaches Poll. The two-time defending national champions have nine wrestlers nationally ranked.
The Huskies are led by senior Austin Goergen and sophomores Vince Dietz and Brett Velasquez. Goergen, a three-time All-American, is a perfect 24-0 on the season and ranks No. 1 at 285 pounds. Dietz is ranked No. 5 at 197 pounds with a record of 24-2. Velasquez, the defending national champ at 125 pounds, ranks fifth at 125 pounds with a record of 16-2.
St. Cloud State, Minnesota State and Augustana all currently have a shot at the NSIC team title. St. Cloud State has already locked up at least a share of the team title.
If Augustana defeats St. Cloud State, the Vikings, Mavericks, and Huskies would share the team crown. If St. Cloud State wins the dual, the Huskies win the title outright.
Next weekend begins the postseason for the Vikings. On Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24 and 25 Augustana travels to Moorhead, Minn. for the NCAA Super 3 Regional.
