In this week’s Coach’s Corner, Minnesota Head Coach Brandon Eggum offers his take on the team’s blowout win over Iowa State last Sunday.
As he did when asked right after the dual, Eggum points to Chris Pfarr’s upset of No. 10 Lelund Weatherspoon at 174 pounds in the first match of the afternoon as the catalyst for the Gophers big day. Coincidentally, while being portrayed as the biggest win of the afternoon, Pfarr’s was the only of Minnesota’s eight victories that did not come with bonus points.
On the heels of Pfarr’s win, the Gophers racked up a pair of major decisions, a tech fall and four pins, the most for the team in a single dual since 2012. Those falls came from No. 7 Ethan Lizak (125), No. 11 Tommy Thorn (141), No. 18 Nick Wanzek (165) and No. 2 Brett Pfarr (197).
The Gophers are idle this weekend as they prepare for the Big Ten Championships. Instead of coaching a dual, Eggum mentions that he and his coaching staff will be out watching high school wrestling, including Minnesota’s individual sectional tournaments.
