Malcolm Allen Takes First At Dave Schultz Memorial Tournament

Colorado Springs, Colo. – Minnesota State Volunteer Assistant Coach and former Maverick heavyweight Malcolm Allen continues to impress on the mat. Allen took part in the Dave Schultz Memorial Tournament on Wednesday at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., finishing with a 3-0 record and in first place.

The tournament featured wrestlers from many countries including Argentina, Bulgaria, Israel, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Wrestling took place in men’s and women’s freestyle events and Greco-Roman wrestling. Allen was the #1 seed in the Greco-Roman 130 kg. weight class and is currently ranked tenth at 130 kg. for the US Senior Greco-Roman team.

In the quarterfinals Allen defeated Luciano De Rio of Argentina by a score of 9-2. The Semifinal match would see Allen face another international wrestler in Japan’s Arata Sonoda. Allen defeated Sonoda by a 7-4 decision. In the finals Allen was pitted against a 2012 US Olympic Team Finalist at 98 kg., Pete Gounaridis of Army (WCAP). Allen defended his #1 seed with a 4-1 victory over Gounaridis.

Allen’s first place finish at the Dave Schultz Memorial Tournament comes on the heels of a third place finish at the 2016 U.S. Senior Nationals last December.

Minnesota State is back in action Thursday at Taylor Center against Southwest Minnesota State with matches starting at 7 p.m.
