Mavericks Win 21-16 Over Augustana in Final Dual of the Season

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Minnesota State won their last dual of the season against Augustana Saturday by a score of 21-16 . With the win the Mavericks improved their overall record to 10-4 and are 7-1 in NSIC duals.

Minnesota State won three out of the first five matches to start the dual with a 12-6 lead.

Paul Selman (So., 133 lbs.) was able to secure the first win in the match for the Mavericks to tie the dual at 3-3 after two matches. Selman trailed his opponent 5-4 heading into the third period where he was able to score multiple times and win a 12-6 decision. Louie Sanders (R-fr., 141 lbs.) and Oscar Ramirez took their match into overtime after finishing 2-2 at the end of the third period. After a scoreless overtime period, Sanders was able to work a reversal and expose his opponents back for a fall at the 8:22 mark.

manklogoWith the Mavericks leading 9-3, Daniel Close (So., 149 lbs.) kept scoring for Minnesota State with a 5-1 decision over Colin Ayers. Derek Herman (Jr., 157 lbs.) and the fourth ranked wrestler in the region, Tyler Nation, were deadlocked after three periods and went into the second overtime match of the dual where Nation would take a 7-2 decision.

Augustana would tie the dual at 12-12 after gaining two decision victories at the 165 and 174 weight classes. Corey Abernathy (Jr., 184 lbs.) was tied in his match-up against #5 Aero Amo and was able to score a takedown and near fall in the last 40 seconds of the match to complete the upset and win by an 11-5 decision. With a slight 15-12 lead in the dual, Matthew Blome (Fr., 197 lbs.) put the match out of reach with a fall in 2:32 of the first period. Blome leads the team with 13 falls this season and improved his record to 22-6. The Mavericks could not get a positive result at heavyweight in the final match of the dual. With the 21-16 win, Minnesota State will move into second place in the NSIC standings.

The Vikings will conclude the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 16 hosting No. 1 St. Cloud State. The match will be held in the Elmen Center at 7 p.m.

The Mavericks will have a short break before traveling to Moorhead, Minn. February 24-25 for the NCAA Division II Super Region Three tournament where Minnesota State wrestlers will compete for a chance to wrestle at the National Championships.
