Defending national champion St. Cloud State University holds on to the top spot in NCAA Division II Wrestling heading into this weekend’s Super Regional competition in the latest edition of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Poll, released this week on D2wrestle.com.
The Huskies feature seven nationally-ranked wrestlers, led by top-ranked Austin Goergen at 285. Maryville and Nebraska-Kearney come in tied for the #2 spot, while Notre Dame move to #3. Central Oklahoma rounds out the top five in the team rankings.
Goergen was SCSU’s top ranked individual at 285-pounds, while defending national champ Brett Velasquez was ranked #5 at 125-pounds this week. At 149-pounds, SCSU’s James Pleski was ranked #6 and Larry Bomstad was ranked #6 at 157-pounds. At 165-pounds, Gabe Fogarty was ranked #9 and Clayton Jennissen was ranked #8 at 174-pounds. SCSU’s other top ranked wrestler was Vince Dietz, who gained a #8 ranking at 197-pounds.
The NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Poll team rankings are tournament strength, and are determined by a points ranking based upon the ranking of a team’s individually ranked student-athletes.
The next ranking will be published prior to the 2017 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships.
