St. Cloud State University senior Austin Goergen (Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia Area H.S.) has been selected as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week of Feb. 6-12, 2017. This marks the second time during the 2016-17 season that Goergen has been named as the NSIC Wrestler of the Week.
The nation’s number one ranked NCAA Division II wrestler at 285-pounds, Goergen improved to 22-0 on the season with a pair of victories in dual matches against #19 Upper Iowa and Mary last week.
On Feb. 12, Goergen completed his week with a fall at 2:03 against UMary’s Dominic Tudor. The pin helped SCSU gain a 42-3 dual match win over the Maruders at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud.
The pin over Tudor was Goergen’s 64th career pin, which sets a new team record for most career falls. He surpasses Tad Merritt (2008-12) for most career pins. Goergen has 13 falls this season and is 22-0 in 2016-17.
The pair of wins over UMary and Upper Iowa helped the Huskies clinch at least a share of their sixth consecutive NSIC championship. The Huskies have won NSIC titles in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. SCSU has won 51 consecutive NSIC dual matches and the Huskies have not lost an NSIC dual match since 2011.
On Thursday, Feb. 16, the Huskies will travel to Augustana University in Sioux Falls, S.D. for a 7 p.m. dual match.
