Three All-Americans Lead the RCTC Yellowjackets to Win NJCAA National Title

The Rochester Community and Technical College wrestling team completed their season this past weekend at the NJCAA National Tournament in Council Bluffs, IA.

The team placed first among non-scholarship schools and were ninth overall. The Yellowjackets won the National Championship in 2014 as well, but this is the highest team placing that they have had in the overall division. The race for the title was decided in the placing round of the tournament. Rochester went into the round in the lead over Camden County by seven points, and at the conclusion won by a narrow one-point margin.

Earning All-American honors for the Yellowjackets was Coltan Laganiere (149), Brett Bradford (157), and Alfred Daniel (165).

rctclogoBrett Bradford placed second going 4-1 in the tournament while picking up three falls and a major decision on his way to the finals. In the finals, Bradford lost to Dayton Racer of Iowa Central. “Brett had an excellent tournament and picked up several bonus points for our team. He’s a great leader and person of tremendous character. Any school that is able to pick him up will be very happy,” said Coach Rager.

Alfred Daniel went 3-2 to capture fourth place. “Alfred is a freshman and a little outsized for 165. He is already planning on bulking up and working for a title next season,” noted Rager.

Coltan Laganiere went 3-3 to place sixth. “I’m happy that Coltan gave RCTC a chance these past two years. I know that I have enjoyed working with him and he will be missed.”

Also picking up victories and important team points were Esteban Teigen (125), Zach Scott (141), Mason Hawkins (197), and Chase Nottestad (285). Other qualifiers to the tournament were Tyus White (133) and Ryan Kottschade (174).

Coach Randy Rager was voted the NJCAA Coach of the Year. “It’s a great honor to receive this award, especially since it is voted on by the other coaches. This team has become more than a team. We are a family,” said Rager.
