Utah Valley Upsets No. 23 North Dakota State 22-16 in Big 12 Conference Dual

FARGO, N.D. — Utah Valley University won six of 10 matches including Grant LaMont’s pin at 149 pounds to upset No. 23-ranked North Dakota State University 22-16 in a Big 12 Conference dual on Friday, Feb. 3, before 795 spectators during Senior Night in the Scheels Center. It was the Wolverines second win in 12 tries over the Bison with both coming in Fargo.

North Dakota State (12-4, 2-2 #Big12WR) is scheduled to wrestle at the Air Force Academy at 8 p.m. Central Time on Friday, Feb. 10, and at Wyoming at 3 p.m. CT on Sunday, Feb. 12.

Lamont’s pin at :46-seconds over NDSU’s Mitch Friedman at 149 pounds was one of two bonus point wins for Utah Valley (5-3, 2-1 #Big12WR) and put the Wolverines up 16-7 after six bouts.

ndsulogo North Dakota State rallied behind No. 8-ranked Clay Ream, who responded with an 18-9 major decision over Raider Lofthouse. Ream improved to 19-3 overall and 14-1 in duals this season with his sixth major decision. That cut the deficit to 16-11.

NDSU 165-pound redshirt freshman Andrew Fogarty became the first Bison wrestler to reach 20 wins on the season with a convincing 18-3 tech fall over Koy Wilkinson. The No. 20-ranked Fogarty is now 20-6 overall and 11-3 in duals picked up his third tech on the year.

However, Utah Valley closed the dual the way they started by taking a pair of decisions. Kimball Bastian claimed a 9-3 decision over Dylan Urbach at 174 pounds, while Will Sumner held off Tyler McNutt at 184.

The Wolverines jumped out to an early 6-0 lead on wins from No. 24-ranked Tanner Orndorff at 197 pounds and Dustin Dennison at 285.

North Dakota State bounced back with No. 4-ranked Josh Rodriguez’ 13-6 decision over Mitchell Brown at 125 pounds and No. 20-ranked Cam Sykora’s 12-3 major decision over Jarod Maynes at 133 as the Bison took a brief 7-6 advantage.. Rodriguez ran his record to 18-1 overall and 15-1 in duals, while Sykora improved to 11-2 overall and a perfect 9-0 in duals.
