Itasca Vikings get commits from six

Five Minnesotans and one Floridian have committed to wrestling for Itasca next season.

itaslogoJonathan Smid from Blackduck placed sixth this year at 195 pounds in Class A. He was also a state qualifier for the Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena Drakes in 2016. Smid plans to start studying criminal justice.

David Foster from Cass Lake was a state qualifier this year at 170 pounds for the BCLB as well. He plans on attending Itasca to study Engineering.

Ben Johnson from Menahga qualified for state this year at 126 pounds in Class A. He also qualified back in 2015 wrestling for United North Central. Johnson plans on completing his generals at Itasca.

Drew Vanvleet from Mora state qualifier at 126 pounds in Class AA in 2016 and also qualified in 2015. Vanvleet plans on attending Itasca to complete his generals. “I’m excited to wrestle for coach Wilkes and the Itasca region has everything that fits me for being an outdoorsman,” stated Vanvleet.

Cory Schmidt of Annandale was a state qualifier at 182 pounds in Class AA in 2016. Schmidt intends on not only wrestling but playing baseball for the Vikings under head coach Justin Lamppa. He plans on attending to complete his generals.

Jeffery Phillips from Sarasota, Florida took sixth this year at 132 pounds for Booker High School. He was a state entrant in 2015 and 2016. Phillips plans on attending Itasca to complete his generals.
