Two-time defending DII National Champion Huskies prepare for NCAA Tournament

The brackets have been announced for the upcoming 2017 NCAA Division II wrestling championships, which will be held in Birmingham, Ala. on March 10-11 at the Birmingham Crossplex facility.

The two-time defending NCAA Division II national champion Huskies will be sending a total of nine wrestlers to the NCAA tournament this year.  The list includes Brett Velasquez (125 lbs./21-2), Mike Rhone 133 lbs./19-6), Jarred Oftedahl (141 lbs./20-5), James Pleski (149 lbs./24-8), Larry Bomstad (157 lbs./19-3), Gabe Fogarty (165 lbs./22-8), Clayton Jennissen (174 lbs./27-8), Uthman Rabiu (184 lbs./17-6) and Austin Goergen (285 lbs./27-1).

scsulogoIn action at 125-pounds, the defending national champion Velasquez will open the tournament with a match against Joshua Lindsey (24-7) of Central Oklahoma.  At 133-pounds, Rhone will match up against Carmine Ciotti (20-2) of Gannon.  Rhone earned All-American status for the Huskies in 2015.

At 141-pounds, Oftedahl will be making his first trip to the NCAA finals and will match up against Bryce Killian (6-5) of King in the first round.  At 149-pounds, Pleski will also be making his first appearance at the NCAA finals and will wrestle Jacob Gerken (20-6) of Colorado Mines in the first round.

Bomstad will be returning to the NCAA finals after gaining All-America status in 2015.  He will wrestle Zach Voytek (15-4) of Seton Hill in the first round at 157-pounds.  At 165-pounds, three-time All-American Fogarty will wrestle Kade Kitchens (22-8) of Shorter in the first round.  Fogarty has earned All-America status in 2013, 2014 and 2015 for the Huskies.

Jennissen will be making his third trip to the NCAA finals in 2017.  He gained All-America status at 174-pounds in 2016 and will face Chance Helmick (31-4) of Chadron State in the first round this year in Birmingham.  At 184-pounds, Rabiu is slated to match up against Garrett Lineberger (18-2) of Notre Dame (OH) in the first round.  Rabiu gained All-America honors for the Huskies in 2016 at 184-pounds.

The Huskies’ national qualifying group is completed by Goergen, who will be making his fourth trip to the NCAA championships.  An All-American in 2014, 2015 and 2016, Goergen will face Kevin Barrett (32-6) of Nebraska-Kearney in the first round in Alabama this year.
