Augustana Adds to Signing Day Haul

SOIUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana University head wrestling coach Jason Reitmeier has announced the signing of six student-athletes during the spring signing period.

Daniel Bishop (Sioux City, Iowa), Stephen Boone (Idaho Falls, Idaho), James Nelson (Martin, S.D.), Noah North (Lugoff, S.C.) Tobias Semler (Marshall, Minn.), and Keaten Schorr (Mantorville, Minn.) have each signed letters of intent to continue their academic and wrestling careers at Augustana.

Bishop, Boone, Nelson, North, Schorr and Semler join Brayden Curry (Sergeant Bluff, Iowa), Trent Kruger (Sibley, Iowa), Matthew Naig (Sibley, Iowa) and Dylan Schuck (Sibley, Iowa) as members of the 2017-18 Augustana wrestling signing class.

stanalogoReitmeier also added Nick Lawrence, of Danville, N.H., to the roster. Lawrence is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Sports Administration and Leadership at Augustana and will wrestle for the Vikings in 2017-18 season.

“We backed up last year’s exceptional recruiting class with another quality class,” head coach Jason Reitmeier said of his incoming class. “All these student-athletes bring a passion and enthusiasm for learning and wrestling. All 11 signees are excited and working hard to challenge next year for starting spots. They are hungry to compete and win at a National level. They also have high educational goals and are excited about the challenges that Augustana Academics hold. We couldn’t be happier with this year’s 2017-18 class and can’t wait to get them on campus.”

The first day of the spring signing period for collegiate wrestling programs was Wednesday, April 12.

Daniel Bishop | Sioux City, Iowa | Hinton | Projected Weight Class: 197/285 pounds

High School: Compiled a record of 168-22 over his high school career … placed second as a junior, third as a senior and fourth as a sophomore at the state tournament … three-time first team all-conference honoree … named first team academic all-state twice … three times named team MVP … four-year letter winner.

Personal: Son of Darwin and Jackie Bishop … born on Aug. 18, 1998, in Sioux City, Iowa … plans to major in Biology with aspirations of becoming a Psychiatrist.

Reitmeier on Bishop: “Dan is an exceptional young man who has had great success both in athletics and academics. We again went after another northwest Iowa kid who not only had lots of wrestling accolades but also the character and maturity we were looking for in a student-athlete. Dan has been extremely successful placing many times in the Iowa state tournament but also participating in football and track. We are excited about Dan’s future at Augustana.”

Stephen Boone | Idaho Falls, Idaho | Bonneville/IWCC | Projected Weight Class: 285 pounds

Iowa Western CC: Two-time NJCAA National Qualifier … NJCAA All-American his sophomore year … led his team to two top-six finishes at the NJCAA national meet … led his team to two top-seven finishes at the NWCA National Duals.

High School: 2015 graduate of Bonneville High School … two-time state runner-up … 101-13 his junior and senior seasons … three-time state qualifier … two-time district champion … three-time letter winner.

Personal: Son of Hyrum and Gayle Boone … born on May 22, 1997, in Idaho Falls, Idaho … plans to major in Business Administration.

Reitmeier on Boone: “We are excited to get another quality big man in the program. Steve comes to us from a winning program in Iowa Western. What we like best is Steve has collegiate experience and that he’s been successful at the national level. He is a mature young man with a great head on his shoulders. He not only has the potential to be a Division II All-American but also an Academic All-American.

James Nelson | Martin, S.D. | Bennett County | Projected Weight Class: 197 pounds

High School: Finished with a record of 131-40 joining the 100 win club … placed fourth at state as a senior with a record of 38-5 … finished in sixth at state as a junior and fifth as a sophomore … four-time state qualifier … four-year letter winner.

Personal: Son of Brent Nelson and Sarah Clifford … born on April 4, 1998, in Rapid City, S.D. … plans to major in Nursing with aspirations of eventually becoming a nurse practitioner.

Reitmeier on Nelson: “We are excited to have James joining the program and becoming a Viking wrestler. James not only is an exceptional wrestler but also is an excellent student. James has a wealth of South Dakota state tournament experience. We focused on bringing in some quality big guys and James is exactly that. James will compete at 197lbs for us. James is another quality young man and excels student.

Noah North | Lugoff, S.C. | Lugoff-Elgin | Projected Weight Class: 141/149 pounds

High School: Compiled a record of 42-2 as a senior and 33-1 as a junior earning state titles both seasons … three-time region champ … four-time All-Region honoree … two-time lower state champion … three-time state qualifier … four-year letter winner.

Personal: Son of Mike and Jill North … born on Jan. 10, 1999 in Oshkosh, Wis. … plans to major in Mathematics with a minor in Actuarial Science.

Reitmeier on North: “Noah comes to us from South Carolina, but he has always been a Midwest kid. Noah grew up around Sioux Falls before moving to South Carolina. Assistant coach Chism Fink stayed in touch with this two-time South Carolina champ and when we had the chance to get him back we took advantage of it. Noah is great student and an even better person. Noah brings a physical style of wrestling to the mat that we like.”

Keaten Schorr | Mantorville, Minn. | Kasson-Mantorville | Projected Weight Class: 141 pounds

High School: Two-time state champion as a senior and a sophomore … helped his team to three team state championships … placed third in state as a freshman and fifth as a junior … twice named to the state All-Tournament team.

Personal: Son of Scott and Brenda Schorr … born on Oct. 6, 1998, in Minneapolis, Minn. … plans to major in Business.

Reitmeier on Schorr: “Keaten has been a winner at every level. He comes from one of the most successful programs in Minnesota and carries that winning attitude with him in everything he does. Keaten has an exciting and aggressive style. We are excited to have a wrestler of Keaten’s quality joining us, as he brings depth to our lower weights along with toughness.”

Tobias Semler | Marshall, Minn. | Marshall Senior | Projected Weight Class: 149 pounds

High School: Went 37-5 his senior season and was the section 3AA champion … was a redwood river riot champion and earned all-conference honors … helped his team reach the final four for the first time in 10 years … four-year letter winner.

Personal: Son of Shawn Semler and Danielle Felcyn … born on Jan. 29, 1999 in Omaha, Neb. … plans to major in Business Administration.

Reitmeier on Semler: “We are excited to have Toby join our program. Toby’s a kid we watched grow over the years in Marshall, Minnesota after working with him at a kids camps. He has continued to improve and grow into an exceptional student-athlete. Toby adds depth to our middle weights. Toby brings a lot of similar qualities to Augustana that former Marshall alum and Augustana All-American Jason Jeremiason had, which is heart and toughness.”
