The 2017 edition of The Guillotine Academic All-State honorees features 30 first-team members, 30 second-team members, 30 third-team members, and 35 honorable mention wrestlers.
Wrestlers, representing 72 teams, were submitted on nomination forms signed by a coach and school administrator verifying their current GPA (minimum of 3.0), the number of current season varsity matches wrestled (minimum of fifteen), current season win percentage (minimum of 60%) and grade (junior or senior).
Points were tallied according to current varsity wins, current state tournament placement, and cumulative high school GPA. Each of the first team wrestlers will receive two certificates and a letter of recognition.
Congratulations to all nominees and thanks to the coaches, administrators, and parents for helping The Guillotine recognize Minnesota’s finest student-athletes.

Tyler Eischens of Anoka
11th grade, 138 pounds
Tyler is a three-time state finalist. He won the 138-pound Class AAA title as a junior. Tyler was runner-up at 126 pounds as a sophomore and at 113 pounds as a freshman. Tyler finished his season undefeated with 49 wins. His current career record is 155-11 (93.4 win %) including 76 pins. Tyler’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include 2017 MWCA Academic All-State, two-time Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion, 2016 freestyle and Greco-Roman All-American, three-year team captain, and four-time all-conference. Tyler is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to continue his wrestling career in college. Tyler’s parents are Heidi and Brian, and his coach is Todd Springer.

Tucker Sjomeling of Delano
12th grade, 132 pounds
Tucker is a three-time state champion. He won the 132-pound Class AA title this year, the 126-pound title as a junior, and the 106-pound title as an eighth-grader. Tucker also placed third at 113 pounds as a sophomore. Tucker had an impressive season record of 42-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 207-16 (92.8 win %) including 109 pins. Tucker’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include three-time Rumble on the Red Tournament champion, five-time Wright County Conference all-conference, three-time team MVP, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, 2016 Guillotine Academic All-State, and three-sport captain. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Nebraska. Tucker’s parents are Mike and Darcy, and his coach is Jeff Olson.

Aaron Cashman of Shakopee
11th grade, 113 pounds
Aaron won the Class AAA title this year at 113 pounds. He was runner-up at 106-pounds as a junior. Aaron also placed fourth at 106 pounds as a sophomore. Aaron had an impressive season record of 39-1. His current career record is 118-4 (96.7 win %) including 63 pins. Aaron’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include being a two-time USA Cadet Folkstyle national champion, UWW Cadet Freestyle national champion, and eighth place at the 2016 UWW Cadet Freestyle World Championships. Future plans are to be a 2017 Cadet World Champion, a 2018 state champion, to wrestle Division I and pursue a business degree in college. Aaron’s parents are Ron and Ann, and his coach is Jim Jackson.

Brandon Moen of Owatonna
12th grade, 182 pounds
Brandon is a two-time state champion and a five-time placewinner. He won the 182-pound Class AAA title this year and the 195-pound title as a junior. Brandon also placed third at 152 pounds as a sophomore, third at 132 pounds as a freshman, and fourth at 113 pounds as an eighth-grader. Brandon finished his season undefeated with 37 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 228-45 including 90 pins. Brandon’s GPA is 3.97. Honors and achievements include five-time Big 9 All-Conference, four-time Minnesota Christmas Tournament placewinner, 2016 Clash Duals All-Academic, 2015 Rumble on the Red Tournament champion, 2016 NHSCA Junior Nationals All-American, 2015 Pre-Season National Champion, and 2016 team captain. Future plans are to wrestle at Eastern Michigan University and get a business degree. Brandon’s parents are Brenda Biesterfeld and Jason Moen, and his coaches are Scott Seykora and Adam Woitalla.
Kenny O’Neil of Prior Lake
11th grade, 160 pounds
Kenny is a three-time state placer winning the 160-pound Class AAA title this year. He placed third at 152 pounds as a sophomore and fifth at 145 pounds as a freshman. Kenny had an impressive season record of 41-2. His current career record is 180-46 including 75 pins. Kenny’s GPA is 3.88. Honors and achievements include Clash XV Scholar-Athlete, three-year Board Scholar, 2016 and 2017 PLHS Wrestling team highest GPA award, three-time team MVP, 2016 Cadet Greco UWW All-American, and mission work to Haiti. Future plans are to continue his wrestling career in college and pursue a degree in healthcare and Spanish. Kenny’s parents are Kevin and Jane, and his coach is Joe Block.

Clay Carlson of Willmar
11th grade, 132 pounds
Clay is a two-time state placewinner. He was the Class AAA 132-pound runner-up this year. He placed sixth at 113 pounds as a freshman. Clay had a season record of 42-4. His current career record is 140-39 including 51 pins. Clay’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include five-time letter winner, five-time all-conference, team captain, team-voted MVP, team highest GPA two years in a row, and ranked second in his class (GPA) Clay is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle for DI college, becoming an All-American, being in a college honors program and possibly getting a master’s degree. Clay’s parents are Leah Kreps and Carl Carlson, and his coach is Ed Oehlers.

Trey Rogers of Hastings
11th grade, 182 pounds
Trey is a two-time state placewinner. He was the Class AAA 182-pound runner-up this year. He placed fourth at 182 pounds as a sophomore. Trey had a season record of 41-6. His current career record is 109-28 including 30 pins. Trey’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include Class President, Link Crew Leader, MN ExCel Award, Peer Helper, two-time team captain, #1 Class Rank, two-time State Dual Meet All-Tournament Team, and Hastings single season takedown leader (247 takedowns). Trey is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to continue his wrestling career in college. Trey’s parents are Norm Rogers and Michelle Jackson, and his coach is Josh McLay.

Mitchell Trigg of Foley
11th grade, 285 pounds
Mitchell made the most of his first state tournament appearance by winning the Class AA heavyweight title this year. Mitchell had a season record of 45-3. His current career record is 82-21 including 39 pins. Mitchell’s GPA is 3.74. Honors and achievements include Granite Ridge Conference All-Conference, KNSI Player of the Week, State Dual Meet All-Tournament Team, St. Cloud Times All-Area Wrester of the Year nominee, Team MVP, and Team Most Falls. Future plans are to compete in Greco and freestyle, wrestle his senior season, and attend college. Mitchell’s parents are Darin and Bonnie, and his coach is Scott Gorecki.

Jake Gliva of Simley
11th grade, 126 pounds
Jake is a two-time state champion, a three-time finalist, and a four-time placewinner. He won the 126-pound Class AA title this year and the 120-pound title as a sophomore. Jake also placed second at 106 pounds as a freshman and fourth at 106 pounds as an eighth-grader. Jake had an impressive season record of 48-2. His current career record is 165-21 including 74 pins. Jake’s GPA is 3.69. Honors and achievements include 2017 MWCA Academic All-State, 2017 junior folkstyle national champion, 2015 cadet folkstyle national champion, and 2015 cadet freestyle nationals All-American. Future plans are to wrestle in college at the Division I level. Jake’s parents are Sue and Keith, and his coach is Will Short.

Zachary Jakes of Mankato West
11th grade, 220 pounds
Zachary is a two-time state finalist and a three-time state entrant. He was the Class AA 220-pound runner-up this year as a junior and the 220-pound runner-up as a sophomore. Zachary had an impressive season record of 41-1. His current career record is 138-35 including 92 pins. Zachary’s GPA is 3.95. Honors and achievements include two-year team captain, five-time letter winner, five-time Spotlight on Scholar, three-time all-conference, 2017 MWCA Academic All-State, football team captain, and three-time football letter winner. Zachary is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are undecided. Zachary’s parents are Paul and Lori, and his coach is Dustin Buttell.

Adam Jaeger of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa
11th grade, 145 pounds
Adam is a two-time state entrant placing third at 145 pounds this year in Class A. Adam had a season record of 43-3. His current career record is 139-47 including 53 pins. Adam’s GPA is 3.99. Honors and achievements include three-year team captain, three-time all-conference, three-time academic all-conference, two-year football team captain, and all-district for football. Adam is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend a four-year college, major in education or a medical field, and continue his athletic career. Adam’s parents are Pat and Sheila, and his coach is Jack Mueller.

Collin Steuber of Fairmont/Martin County West
11th grade, 160 pounds
Collin is a three-time state entrant placing second at 160 pounds this year in Class AA. Collin had a season record of 42-5. His current career record is 135-43 including 57 pins. Collin’s GPA is 3.89. Honors and achievements include three-time Valley All-Conference, three-time Big South All-Conference, three-year team captain, five-time athletic letter winner, and Academic Excellence awards. Future plans are high goals for his senior year of high school. Collin’s parents are Mike and Heidi, and his coach is Adam Williamson.

Peter Nelson of St. Cloud Apollo
12th grade, 145 pounds
Peter is a two-time state finalist and a four-time state entrant. He was the Class AA 145-pound runner-up this year as a senior and the 138-pound runner-up as a junior. Peter had a season record of 29-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 166-50 including 35 pins. Peter’s GPA is 3.96. Honors and achievements include 2017 MWCA Academic All-State, 2016 Guillotine Academic All-State, six-time letter winner, four-time all-conference, three-year team captain, 2016 and 2017 St. Cloud Times All-Area, two-time football all-conference, and two-year baseball letter winner. Future plans are to attend Bemidji State University. Peter’s parents are Kevin and Leah, and his coach is Michael Beehler.

Jarret Haglund of Zumbrota-Mazeppa
11th grade, 220 pounds
Jarret was the Class A 220-pound runner-up this year. He is a two-time state entrant. Jarret had a season record of 38-11. His current career record is 66-26 including 18 pins. Jarret’s GPA is 3.87. Honors and achievements include currently taking College Algebra and AP Statistics, InterMat JJ Classic third place, Junior State Freestyle sixth place, and two-time football letter winner. Jarret is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to get a degree in BioMed and wrestle in college. Jarret’s parents are Rob and Lauren, and his coach is Link Steffen.

Peyton Robb of Owatonna
11th grade, 145 pounds
Peyton is a two-time state champion, a three-time finalist, and a four-time state entrant. He was the 145-pound Class AAA runner-up this year. He won the 120-pound title as a sophomore and the 106-pound title as a freshman. Peyton had an impressive season record of 39-1. His current career record is 149-25 including 75 pins. Peyton’s GPA is 3.84. Honors and achievements include four-time cadet nationals All-American, two-time cadet FILA All-American, 2017 Owatonna Service Award winner, multiple-time all-conference selection, two-time Junior National Team member, Junior Duals Greco All-Tournament, and 2017 State Duals All-Tournament Team Future plans are to continue wrestling and study Exercise Science at South Dakota State. Peyton’s parents are Carrie and Tracey, and his coaches are Scott Seykora and Adam Woitalla.

Brady Tweeton of Barnesville
11th grade, 138 pounds
Brady is a four-time state entrant placing third at 138 pounds this year in Class A. Brady had an impressive season record of 40-2. His current career record is 147-33 including 65 pins. Brady’s GPA is 3.88. Honors and achievements include 2017 MWCA Academic All-State, team captain, all-conference, Barnesville MVW 2017, and football All-District 2017. Future plans are undecided. Brady’s parents are Kyle and Ann, and his coach is Scott Snobl.

Matthew Petersen of Byron
12th grade, 106 pounds
Matthew is a two-time state entrant winning the 106-pound Class AA title this year. He placed fourth at 106 pounds as a junior. Matthew finished his season undefeated with 39 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 98-25 including 38 pins. Matthew’s GPA is 3.55. Honors and achievements include two-time all-conference, 2017 MWCA Academic All-State, and two-time academic all-conference. Future plans are to wrestle at Minnesota State University Mankato. Matthew’s parents are Tom and Amy Peterson and Tom Cardinal, and his coach is Ryan Radke.

Samuel Grove of Moorhead
12th grade, 195 pounds
Samuel is a four-time state entrant winning the 195-pound Class AAA title this year. He placed second at 195 pounds as a junior and fourth at 160 pounds as a sophomore. Samuel had an impressive season record of 42-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 187-37 including 110 pins. Samuel’s GPA is 3.49. Honors and achievements include 2016 Junior Nationals Freestyle All-American, Captain in 3 sports – Football (3x Letter), Wrestling (6x Letter), Track & Field (4x Letter), 2017 MWCA Academic All-State and Scholarship recipient, and 2016 Guillotine Academic All-State 2nd Team. Future plans are to wrestle at South Dakota State University. Samuel’s parents are Mark and Kimberly, and his coach is Skip Toops.
Bailee O’Reilly of Goodhue
12th grade, 160 pounds
Bailee is a two-time state champion. He won the 160-pound Class A title this year and the 152-pound title as a junior. Bailee had an impressive season record of 41-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 185-61. Bailee’s GPA is 3.49. Honors and achievements include 2016 Bi-State Classic Champion, 2017 NHSCA Senior Nationals All-American, three-time USA Wrestling Folkstyle All-American, 2017 MWCA Academic Scholarship recipient, and Post-Bulletin All-Area Team. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Minnesota and pursue a business degree. Bailee’s parents are Zach and Dorothy O’Reilly and the late Jamie O’Reilly, and his coach is Josh Grant.

Alex Crowe of Shakopee
12th grade, 152 pounds
Alex is a four-time state placer winning the 152-pound Class AAA title this year. He placed third at 132 pounds as a junior, fourth at 113 pounds as a sophomore, and sixth at 113 pounds as a freshman. Alex had an impressive season record of 45-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 155-22 including 39 pins. Alex’s GPA is 3.44. Honors and achievements include two-time Academic All-Section, two-time Fargo All-American, two-time folkstyle All-American, Clash Duals All-Tournament Team, Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion, and Rumble on the Red Tournament champion. Brody Nielsen of Albert Lea Area
11th grade, 138 pounds
Brody is a two-time state entrant placing third at 138 pounds this year in Class AA. Brody had a season record of 25-3. His current career record is 82-17 including 44 pins. Brody’s GPA is 3.93. Honors and achievements include most falls for Albert Lea in 2016-2017, high school honor roll every semester, four-time letter winner, and youth wrestling coach. Future plans are to attend a four-year college. Brody’s parents are Jeff and Jodi, and his coach is Larry Goodnature.

Mike Delich of Eastview
12th grade, 195 pounds
Mike is a three-time state entrant placing third at 195 pounds this year in Class AAA. He also placed fourth at 195 pounds as a junior. Mike had an impressive season record of 36-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 111-22 including 68 pins. Mike’s GPA is 3.81. Honors and achievements include two-time All-District for football, All-State Academic for football, All-State Academic for track, All-Star Team for football, and St. Paul Lions Athlete of the Year finalist. Future plans are to play football at the University of Minnesota and major in finance at the Carlson School of Management. Justin Sampson of Waseca
11th grade, 120 pounds
Justin is a two-time state placewinner. He was the Class AA 120-pound runner-up this year. He placed third at 113 pounds as a sophomore. Justin had a season record of 29-6. His current career record is 101-30 including 43 pins. Justin’s GPA is 3.77. Honors and achievements include three-time Big South All-Conference, two-year team captain, four-time letter winner, 2017 Waseca County News All-Area 1st Team, 2017 Dave Erickson Tournament OW, football team captain, and member of Select Choir and Show Choir. Dayne is a two-time state placewinner. He was the Class A 113-pound runner-up this year. He placed third at 106 pounds as a junior. Dayne had a season record of 26-3. His current career record is 76-6 (92.7 win %). Dayne’s GPA is 3.78. Honors and achievements include KNUJ Wrestler of the Week, two-year KDUZ All-Area Team, and two-year Journal All-Area Team. Jared is a four-time state entrant winning the 182-pound Class AA title this year. He placed fourth at 170 pounds as a junior and second at 170 pounds as a sophomore. Jared had an impressive season record of 43-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 178-70 including 115 pins. Jared’s GPA is 3.41. Honors and achievements include five-time all-conference, 2017 MWCA Academic All-State, 2014 cadet Greco All-American, 2015 cadet freestyle and Greco All-American, 2016 folkstyle All-American, school record for wins and pins, and two-time all-conference for football. Dylan is a two-time state entrant placing third at 126 pounds this year in Class AAA. He also placed fifth at 113 pounds as a junior. Dylan had a season record of 43-6. His current career record is 119-15 including 76 pins. Dylan’s GPA is 3.7. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference, two-year team captain, and 2016 state freestyle and Greco state champion. Future plans are to continue his wrestling career in college. Wade Sullivan of Lakeville North

Wade is a three-time state finalist. He won the 113-pound Class AAA title as a freshman. Wade was runner-up at 160 pounds as a senior and at 145 pounds as a junior. Wade had a season record of 31-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 170-33 including 56 pins. Wade’s GPA is 3.7. Honors and achievements include four-time all-conference, six-time letter winner, two-year team captain, two-time team Most Valuable Wrestler, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, 2017 MWCA Scholarship recipient, 2016 Guillotine Academic All-State, 2016 USA Today MN Football Player of the Year, and 2016 Minnesota Mr. Football. Future plans are to play football at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and major in business finance or exercise science with a business minor. Wade’s parents are Matt and Dana, and his coach is Dan Recchio.

Jake Allar of St. Michael-Albertville
12th grade, 170 pounds
Jake is a two-time state champion, a three-time finalist, and a five-time placewinner. He won the 170-pound Class AAA title this year and the 152-pound title as a junior. Jake also placed second at 138 pounds as a sophomore, third at 113 pounds as a freshman, and fourth at 106 pounds as an eighth-grader. Jake had an impressive season record of 45-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 250-27 (90.3 win %) including 142 pins. Jake’s GPA is 3.35. Max placed third at state this year at 106 pounds in Class AAA. It was his first state tournament appearance. Max had a season record of 38-6. His current career record is 45-9 including 11 pins. Max’s GPA is 3.72. Honors and achievements include multiple-time national All-American in folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman, Dean’s list every quarter of high school, and Academic All-Section.
